End of the world books?
I'm a big end of the world book fan (The Stand, just about any zombie book etc etc)
I'm trying to get some more recommendations for authors/titles. I found a short list here http://www.doomers.us/forum2/index.php?topic=13504.0 I haven't read through the whole topic yet but it looks promising |

I would include Forge of God by Greg Bear.

This may not be what you are looking for, but I read recently that Bishop Sheen said that the two greatest end of the world books were The Brothers Karamazov and Lord of the World by Robert Hugh Benson.
Both of them are available for download here at MR, and I've been looking forward to reading them both for some time now. Since I have not yet read either book, I don't know if Bishop Sheen meant "end of the world" the same way you mean it. |

jduvall, you might find these of interest. They are some of my favorite ones.
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson Alas Babylon by Pat Frank Night Of The Triffids by Simon Clark The Postman by David Brin When Worlds Collide by Edwym Bulmer A Canticle For Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr. Also, the following list might be of interest to you as well. I have read the majority of them and they are all very good. Unfortunately they are not all available in ebook format. http://www.abebooks.com/books/apocal...-fiction.shtml |

I just finished and greatly enjoyed #10 on the list you linked to, Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.

Wikipedia has a list of apocalyptic & post-apoc fiction. Also, the page about the genre includes some lists, with notes about common themes and so on.
Post-apocalypse is my favorite genre (Theme? Topic?) and I tend to include books in it that don't show up on the normal lists. Atlas Shrugged. (I have a special fondness for social apocalypse, where it's not a war or a plague but gradual breakdown of society until too many little processes have stopped working, and large systems start to collapse.) Starhawk's The Fifth Sacred Thing. Boyett's Ariel. Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy. |

If you enjoy John Wyndham, John Christopher (Samuel Youd) is worth giving a go - especially 'The Death of Grass', 'The World in Winter', 'Pendulum'.

One of the consequences of Geo-restriction in books, leads to searching out alternative authors .... hence ....
Darrell Bain - Pet Plague Trilogy - book one is a separate story to books 2 & 3; but the trilogy explores the consequences of genetic manipulation, especially when applied human/animals. Not strictly "end of the world", but "end of the world as we know it!". Some of his other works are good, too .... |

I love This Immortal by Roger Zelazny. Also, Joshua Calkins-Treworgy has some great zombie books. Some of Ray Bradbury's short stories are classics.
