A mixed reading week...
Read:
  • Lucky in Love (Lucky Harbor #4) by Jill Shalvis (B+/4 stars)
  • At Last (Lucky Harbor #5) by Jill Shalvis (B+/4 stars)
  • Staking His Claim (Line of Duty #5) by Tessa Bailey (D+/2 stars)
  • Forever and a Day (Lucky Harbor #6) by Jill Shalvis (B-/3 stars)
  • Under the Mistletoe (Lucky Harbor #6.5) by Jill Shalvis (C-/2 stars)
I didn't do too bad shopping. Was disappointed that the Kobo contest codes stopped working a few days earlier than usual. Have a bunch of new releases I want, but told myself I couldn't buy them with no "good" coupon codes unless I was going to read them right away. Since I plan to watch lots of Olympics coverage I managed to restrain myself

I finally have some purchases to report, I was so well behaved in January!

Reading this week was just the pits though, a couple DNFs (marked 1-star, for Calibre tracking) and I don't know if I was in a bad mood when reading or what, but so many 1-stars is just abnormal for me. The Nancy Warren was actually not bad if you like Suspense, it just was NOT what I expected from a Blaze - hate when that happens!

Fascination by Anne Hampson (Silhouette 1981)

Quote:
When Hydee answers the ad placed by Marques Carlos de Alva Manrique, she expects to be taken on as a governess and nursemaid to his two children. But when the darkly handsome Marques makes a surprising alternative proposal--that she become his wife instead--Hydee could not be more shocked.

She barely knows the man, but she finds herself undeniably drawn to him. Will she deny his proposal, or will his searing caresses draw her into a life she never could have imagined?
There are also several 1980s Silhouette backlist titles now published by Rosetta on sale for $0.99

Rushed to the Altar (Blackwater Brides #1) by Jane Feather - $1.99
Kindle | Nook

Quote:
From New York Times bestselling author Jane Feather comes the first of a wonderful new trilogy, The Blackwater Brides, set in the sensually im-proper Georgian period, in which three noble brothers discover they will be forced to find brides under highly unusual circumstances.

Jasper Sullivan, Earl of Blackwater, needs a prostitute. Not in the usual way, however. His wealthy uncle’s will promises to divide his huge fortune among his nephews if each rescues a fallen woman . . . by marrying her! And since Jasper’s estates were already mortgaged to the hilt before he inherited them, when he catches a pretty young prostitute trying to pick his pocket, he immediately makes his proposal.

Clarissa Astley is not at all what Jasper believes. The orphaned daughter of a prosperous merchant, she is searching the seedier districts of London for her young brother, abducted by their evil guardian, who wants the little boy’s inheritance. But she needs powerful help, and the darkly handsome Earl of Blackwater is certainly that. So she pretends to be exactly what he assumed— a risky charade for an innocent virgin. But when passion flares between Jasper and Clarissa, the deception becomes even more difficult to handle. . . .

Angel's Rest (Eternity Springs #1) by Emily March (aka Geralyn Dawson) - $0.99
Kindle | Kobo

Quote:
Beloved author Emily March returns with a warm and uplifting new novel about a small town with a big heart. Welcome to Eternity Springs, a little piece of heaven in the Colorado Rockies.

Gabriel Callahan has lost everything that mattered. All he wants is solitude on an isolated mountain estate. Instead, he gets a neighbor. Vibrant, no-nonsense Nic Sullivan is Eternity Springs’ veterinarian, and she has an uncanny plan to lure this talented architect back to the world of the living. First with a dog, next with a renovation project, and, finally, with a night of passion that ends with a surprise.

Now a man still raw from tragedy must face the biggest struggle of his heart. Can he forgive himself and believe in the power of second chances? Dare he trust in the promise of a future and a brand-new family here in Eternity Springs?

The Bridal Season (Bridal Stories #1) - $2.99
Kindle | Kobo

Quote:
Letty Potts, a petty schemer by necessity, has decided to go straight. But after narrowly escaping the wrath of her partner in crime, she finds herself at Paddington Station with nothing but the gown she’s wearing and another woman’s train ticket clutched in her hand. Masquerading as the redoubtable “Lady Agatha” of Whyte Wedding Celebrations, Letty arrives in the remote village of Little Bidewell, where she is to arrange the nuptials of a young society bride.

Amid the dizzying whirl of pre-wedding festivities, nobody suspects Letty’s secret—except Sir Elliot March. A war hero who has forsworn love, Elliot senses something decidedly amiss about this outspoken young woman, yet she awakens in him a passionate yearning he’d thought was lost forever. Soon, though, a desperate deception embroils them both in a web of scandal and danger as Letty’s past catches up with her, threatening not only her life but Elliot’s—and their love.
Bridal Favors (Bridal Stories #2) - $2.99
Kindle | Kobo

Quote:
Evelyn Whyte has never forgotten the night she first met Justin Powell—or the shocking indiscretion that left the raffish military hero eternally in her debt. Now, desperate to save her aunt’s foundering nuptial-planning enterprise, she’s ready for Justin to repay the favor. All she needs is his scenic ancestral home, where she’s determined to show the world that even a woman innocent in the ways of love can turn a simple wedding into the social event of the season.

Justin is happy to oblige, but his hospitality may place the wedding party in peril. Unaware of the daring double life he conceals behind a cloak of amiable gentility, Evie and her guests descend on North Cross Abbey. Pursued by enemy agents amid a whirl of festivities, Justin vows to keep Evie safe. But who will protect him from the charms of this alluring woman—and the promise of a matchless love worth any risk?
The Other Guy's Bride (Braxton #2) - $0.99
Kindle

Quote:
Determined to prove her worth as a budding archeologist, Ginesse Braxton vows to solve one of the world's greatest mysteries--to find the location of the lost city of Zerzura. Unfortunately, no man dares take the risk of escorting the resolute young scholar across the open desert. But on her way to Egypt, Ginesse engages in a daring deception--she will switch places with Mildred Whimpelhall, who is traveling to meet her fiancé.

Cynical adventurer Jim Owen will do anything to escape the dark secrets of his troubled past. Betrayed by the woman he loved, scorned by proper society, he agrees to carry out a danger-fraught task: escort Mildred Whimpelhall across a lawless desert to her intended. But Jim is about to learn that "Mildred" isn't exactly what she seems . . . and the dangers they face together are eclipsed only by an even greater peril: falling in love, against all reason, with another guy's bride . . .

What did you all call badly researched historicals, mistoricals? Anyway is Shana Galen that kind of writer, doing a contempt in Austen clothing? There is one of hers on sale True Spies $1.99 Kindle. Looks interesting but this in the Booklist review: "When Winn arrives home after another difficult day at work.." just rang so false. Any comments would be appreciated.

Just read the excerpt that's what I do. I can tell right away if it's a mistorical.

After reading the preview. I immediately like the writing. Oh course I already own it. After reading about her other books it seems she may be middle of the road to mistorical as the first in this series is based off the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith. I am intrigue!

I think we may need to define mistoricals better like a category one mistorical and category two mistorcalsc...etc

I'm thinking Category One Mistorical would be like Tessa Dare's Avons and Theresa Romain books. Where the writing immediately sounds contemporary and the plot is too outrageous to fit the time period. There is references to too many modern sayings and the dialogue does not sound right.

While Category Two would be like Grace Burrowes, Jennifer McQuiston, Sherry Thomas possible Shana Galen where while it may not have happen in that time period it still somehow can be overlooked because the dialogue and the writing fit the time period.

Category three would middle of the Road like Karen Hawkins, Sabrina Jefferies, Amanda Quick and Julia Quinn...etc.

Mistoricals is such general term I think this may help us know whether we may like the book or not.

Just like storms! Ha, I like it. I'm not sure how easy it would be for me to differentiate between 2 and 3, but I could certainly figure out number 1.

I have Shana Galen's whole spies series, but haven't started it yet so I'm no help there... but that blurb would have turned me off too!

You can add Shana Galen to the Category One. Her dialogue is too modern even the swear words she uses. It doesn't feel like a regency at all. I have to read them though as I bought it. I wish I had been more aware...

I switch to a Karen Hawkins book instead. I was in the mood for something light hearted.
