It depends on who you go through. If you self publish through Amazon, Smashwords, etc, you basically have cut out the middleman. If you sell through a large publisher, you're not going to get anywhere near 70% royalty. You're doing good if you get half that.

Independent authors have no audience, it is therefore impossible for them to dominate any market, if they did, then they would be mainstream authors.

ebook list prices are generally lower than printed book list prices.

But under the Agency model, printed books can (and often are) discounted, whereas ebooks cannot be. Coupons can be applied to printed books, but not ebooks. So often the ebook ends up as more expensive than the printed book.

At which point, I find another book to read, and possibly buy.

From my personal experience this is only true if the pbook is a hardcover or trade. Mass markets are almost always exactly the same list and sometimes more.
