Le Fanu, Joseph Sheridan: Uncle Silas. v1. 19 June 07

A nice, big juicy Victorian mystery with dark undertones: this is really a fine gothic tale, one that depicts a landscape with a dark underbelly of dread...

How can you resist this first sentence from the book: "It was winter - that is, about the second week in November - and great gusts were rattling at the windows, and wailing and thundering among our tall trees and ivied chimneys - a very dark night, and a very cheerful fire blazing, a pleasant mixture of good round coal and spluttering dry wood, in a genuine old fireplace, in a sombre old room."

Here's what one reader wrote:

"This book is great for anyone who is a fan of Gothic, Victorian, or mystery novels. All of these genres come into play for an interesting story. The tone is dark, and the descriptions of the landscape help give the book a "spooky" feel..."

I hope you like it.
