Understood. I only mentioned it due to the previous talk of the PPro, and of non-US interest in purchasing coloured units for shipping overseas. This might help make a decision.

Just cause I'm a pirate, don't mean I hijack threads fer fun

Just because you can strip Mobi DRM (not legal in a lot of locations) and then use Calibre to convert the Mobi file to ePub, doesn't mean it's a moot point. The previous device supported Mobi DRM and the Mini supports a completely different DRM. As someone who has a lot of money invested in Mobi DRM books, it's hard to say, just illegally strip the DRM from those several hundred books and then use Calibre to convert each one... so that you can read that book on this new device.

What about offering the Mini in 2 flavors? You can purchase an ePub model or a Mobi model?

This is what Bookeen is doing with their new model, or at least what Bookeen has said they will do (the MOBI firmware isn't available yet). The problem for Bookeen and for Jinke is that it costs money and other resources to support two firmwares. It probably costs more than supporting two readers in the same firmware (which would be the best solution, if only MobiPocket/Amazon allowed it). There really isn't much doubt that ePub is the better format for Europe going forward, so I can see why BeBook has opted to only support it on new devices

Actually BeBook is offering that. They have two different tastes of firmware for the Bebook on their site. Not sure about the Mini, though

What they are offering is the old firmware for MOBI, or the new firmware for ADE. The Mini only gets a variant of the "new" firmware.

Bookeen is being more responsive to its customers by offering parallel sets of firmware (same revision) one with MOBI and the other with ePub. Bookeen's heart is in the right place, but I wonder if they can pull it off. Jinke has issued many more firmware upgrades than Bookeen, and with real improvements between versions.

To be honest, I think Mobipocket with DRM is going to go away from most dedicated readers due to the way Mobipocket wants things. They want to be THE only format with DRM and due to ePub being the dominant format outside the US, having ePub does make more sense.

Bookeen may be more responsive with two sets of firmware, but if buy an Opus now, you'll have just epub and then by the time the Mobipocket firmware comes out, you'll already have ePub eBooks either converted or with DRM and you won't want Mobipocket.

Now I'm even more tempted by the Astak device...

I have to admit I'm a little annoyed at the way Bebook are handling this. One picture on the homepage of the Mini (from May) promising more information shortly, one tweet saying it will be here within four weeks (from July).

They must have more information than this at this point.

Completely agree on this. If the €50 taxes wouldn't be added or the €40 S&H would be much lower, I'd have pre-ordered an Astak instead of waiting for the BeBook (if I had made up my mind, that is...)

If BeBook doesn't deliver before September 30th (also depending a bit on the Sony), I'll probably order it from Astak anyway.

Sigh. You're right, I didn't notice the date. I wonder what their problem is. Oh well, I'll keep waiting.
