JB Lite questions
couple clear up questions please, about the JB LITE only
1) Can you download books from the Public Library? 2) I read it also has Text to Speech (like the Astak) 3) Can it read "natively" (without converting) older PDB books (palm docs) 4) If left on, how long would rechargeable batteries (on average) last? 5) Can you use it kept Plugged in? 6) Do dual language dictionaries work between English/Chinese, English/Japanese, English/Korean? 7) I have a Astak Pocket Pro... how would this copare for PDF (graphics)? 8) Table of Contents/Links ?? If I have a book with tons of chapters (Like a GK Chesterton work), will there be a TOC where I can just click a number to go to the chapter" (someone commented before it was not able?) What's the best thing about these over competition? Ok, that's it. thanks Last edited by cancelx; 04-28-2010 at 09:33 PM. |

No - Currently libraries use DRM ePubs or DRM PDFs and the JB Lite doesn't handle these formats.
No - The JB Lite doesn't have audio output. Quote:

I think the compact size and price are a big plus. I bought these for my kids. It supports a wide range of formats but currently the only DRM format supported is PDB. This doesn't bother me because I remove DRM from all of my purchases so I'm able to buy from most every store without worry. Someone else will have to advise on 6 and 7. |

6) No Just the languages listed in the specs.
7) It depends on the PDF, to some extent, but no display of that small a size well do a very good job with large image based PDFs. Also; the current firmware for reading PDF in the JBL does not support "PDF Reflow". Luck; Ken |

The truly unique thing about the Jetbook lite is that is uses 4 AA batterys.
They can be standard Alkaline, or similar, non rechargeable. Or you can use a rechargeable AA battery. With 2 sets of battery's, assuming you have the spare set charged. You never have to stop reading to charge your reader. You simply swap out the old batterys for the fresh ones, power up, and go back to reading. 5 minutes tops from shut down to back to your book. A couple of us are using the new NiZn rechargeable batterys that output 1.6v instead of the standard 1.2v with pretty good results. Also if a standard Li-Ion battery needs to be replaced its 30$ + and taking the case apart. It is rated for 3 - 500 duty cycles. Depending on how much you read that could be as little as a year. NiZn 4 battery set sells for 13$ and is rated for 1 - 2,000 duty cycles. Even at rechargeing them daily that is 3 - 5 years and less than half the cost. As for what is truly unique over competition, #1 answer has to be price. #2 is AA batterys, #3 would be reflective TFT screen that is easy to read in all light with no flash and almost instantaneous page turn. |

Well said, Bill.
The JBL is not for those who want bells and whistles. If it cost in the low 200's like its competition, it would not seem as attractive. Clearly, the primary appeal is that Newegg and others have it on sale for $99. The AA batteries and TFT screen make it a great bargain in my view, but if it were $199 I'd be tempted by other choices. For example, everyone says that the PocketBook 360 at $230 is a great device. If the 360 were only $30 more than the JBL, I'd consider buying it instead. |

i was really tempted, but for a couple big huddles for me...
1) No Table of Contents links? I use a reader for some length stuff where chapter jumps are a must (a lot of Chesterton is just not manageable without) 2) No Public Library...er.. it's a big attraction for a reader 3) PDB, uncertain if old PDB (palm doc) will work, I have a ton of SciFi and others in this format. hummm... |

I have also all the PDB ebooks that struck my interest, also mostly classic sci-Fi,
from the "alt.binaries.e-book.palm" and "alt.binaries.e-books.palm". So far, they all have been very readable on the JBL. Luck; Ken |

Actually, I never ran across any porn, kiddie or otherwise, (unless you count Lolita)
in the two groups I listed. You have to spell and punctuate just as I listed them. Most of the e-book binary newsgroups have disappeared, as the USENET is slowly fading away. You need to be using a usenet provider with very good binaries retention like Giganews. Luck; Ken |
