Yup, it's indexed (243c), with a broken ICC profile embedded to fake a Grey colorspace.

Even IM complains about it.

That should probably also be in the FAQ: don't embed ICC profiles, recent libpng versions are much more finicky than before about stupid combinations . Which probably explains why it worked before (libpng12 -> libpng16).

The imagemagick docs at the link I provided also warn about that.
But IM can remove that (and anything else appended/embedded).

@Brynwall: Is that Photoshop on MS or on Mac that your using?
(Not that it matters, imagemagick runs on either plus Linux.)

Oh, and that one has transparent assigned to 0 rather than to 255.

Second confirmation that KFX covers are now extracted for cover mode in the 26Sep snapshot. I've been using an OSX automator script to process downloaded cover images and FTP them to my paperwhite but I still had to copy them individually to the screensavers directory everytime I changed books so I'm very pleased to be able to skip all that. Hi,
I used the above imagemagick script to convert a bunch of .jpgs book covers extracted from some epubs into png's named cover01.png up to cover150.png. i put them in the screensaver folder. i was surprised when the pictures renamed themselves, and the last 50 pictures disappeared, leaving only 100 pictures. i guess thats the limit?

My goal in extracting my book covers to this screensavers folder was to automatically see a different book cover each time the kindle sleeps. But I am not even sure if what I am doing is necessary...

...because what does the 'auto' setting do? Unless I missed it, the instructions mention this mode but I never saw what it is supposed to do.

do i even need to do it that way, or is the purpose of 'auto' to auto extract book covers, and when paired with 'random' gets me what i want?

all that said, i can't get the screensavers to work at all. the sample screensaver never showed up. can i post a debug log on here? where in the filesystem should i look for one? thank you

@bookreader1: Yep, a 100 files is the limit (not ours, Amazon's). They're moved to the overflow folder.

'auto' just enables the hack. Check the KUAL menu, it might be clearer for you.

The screen saver add-in will not work on an SO Kindle, so pay the fee to have special offers removed.

If you still have questions, please read this post.

That said, you can unsubscribe to Special Offers at any point of the process with no ill effect.
Do note that the "Swipe to Unlock" behavior is a particularity of the Special Offers screensavers that this hack will not replicate (this is in particular good to know if you happen to own a magnetic cover, since those severely limit the effective amount of time you'll actually see a screensaver).

@bookreader1: The SO warning is literally the first thing written at the top of the install instructions, and is clearly spelled out.
And that's done using the same terminology used in bright orange in the price box of Amazon's website when you buy a Kindle.
