Thumbs down Lord Mandelson Sucks - Wants to monitor you for "piracy."

"The UK government has been laying out some of the ways it intends to pursue persistent net pirates.
It comes as Lord Mandelson confirmed that he would introduce tough measures against illegal file-sharers.
Initially pirates could have download caps imposed or have their bandwidth restricted.
If that did not prove effective in reducing illegal file-sharing, the government will consider disconnecting them from the network.
The Department for Business, Skills and Innovation said the legislation will come into force in April 2010, with the tougher disconnection policy introduced in the spring of 2011 if necessary.
It has asked Ofcom to monitor levels of file-sharing.
ISP TalkTalk said the plans were "ill-conceived" and said it was prepared to challenge measures "in the courts".
"What is being proposed is wrong in principle and won't work in practice," the firm said.
"In the event we are instructed to impose extra judicial technical measures we will challenge the instruction in the courts."..."

You're only mentioning the "scare stuff". The other side of the story, which is very welcome, is that the government has also said that they will decriminalise ripping CDs to your iPod, giving copies to family and friends, and so on.

Carrots and sticks.

....
Phew! How benevolent of the government!

Now I don't have to live in fear, because I have all my DVDs, BRs and CDs ripped and stored on my home server. Oh, and I was really worried about the Feds busting through my door, because my neighbor lent me an advanced copy of Up....

Nope. No carrots. Well, may be some, but ultimately, we are not going to like where the content providers want to stick them.

They'd love to lock all "alternative" avenues, so that they can charge us $5 for a 30-hour rental for that "Up" stream, and then offer it as a great deal for $4, if we sign a 2-year subscription agreement.

It's worth it for them, to spend a few $$$$$ lobbying a few Mandelsons, rather than to have to drop their prices to more reasonable levels, and make good content easily available on the market, which in reality would be much more effective at combatting piracy.

There's good news and bad.

The good news is that everyone in the UK can have a free wheelchair.

The bad news is that some bloke called Crusher has to break your legs with a lump hammer

This law is a stripping of human rights (the European parliament agree with me on this one) brought about by a slimy, underhanded, technophobe whose only motivation is greed. There is no 'upside' to this law. There is no 'justification'. Accusation is not the same as guilt, although these bastards would have us believe that it is so.

Oh, and ripping your own collection was never criminal, there is no law on the books in the UK that makes fair-use backup a crime, not even a civil matter. That's absolute FUD and you know it.

No, you are incorrect. Format shifting - which includes ripping a CD which you've perfectly legally bought - is currently a copyright violation in the UK. The government has been saying for a while that this is an outdated anomaly which needs to be corrected, and now they are doing so. Of course, nobody is ever actually prosecuted for ripping their own CDs, but the fact remains that doing so is technically illegal.

Here's a BBC News item on the topic:
