So I check, under Mac OS X, you may use

For exemple for an Opus:

newfs_msdos -F32 -v "Cybook Opus" /dev/diskX

where X is the number of the disk that correspond to your Cybook.

Thanks, Godzil. I have filed that gem in Evernote so will be able to access it in the future!

Hello Everyone here...
Sorry may I ask for help?
I've got a Cybook opus with exactly the same problem as described in this topic. Everytime I turn it on It asks me the selection of language. If I use Calibre after I can't see the books I've put into the opus with. If I put the books into an sd card It recognizes them as soon as possible...
I've got only linux on my computer and I tried these commands:

sudo umount /dev/sdb
sudo mkfs.vfat -l /dev/sdb1

But the last command isn't recognized!?
The answer is:
mkfs.vfat 3.0.9 (31 Jan 2010)
No device specified!
Usage: mkdosfs [-a][-A][-c][-C][-v][-I][-l bad-block-file][-b backup-boot-sector]
[-m boot-msg-file][-n volume-name][-i volume-id]
[-s sectors-per-cluster][-S logical-sector-size][-f number-of-FATs]
[-h hidden-sectors][-F fat-size][-r root-dir-entries][-R reserved-sectors]
/dev/name [blocks]

What can I do?
Thanks in advance

What IS*the version of your OPUS?

If it is not the latest version (2.1 / 1.6) do not bother to ask nor try to format it.

(sorry to be aggressive about this, but there is a lot of people asking for support on device that have version that are buggy, and, it was well described, so I make no longer support for device that are not up to date, version prior to 2.1/1.6 have huge bug on internal FS support for both Gen3 400Mhz and Opus, and the only solution is to update the device to the latest version)

No problem. It is the last. I downloaded the 2.1 firmware and installed it. The reader acts exactly as described in this topic:
1) selection of language at turn on
2) calibre doesn't work
3) books on microsd are recognized.

Ps: only I think I'm stupid using the terminal in linux because that damned "-l" isn't recognized!

Strikeiron, maybe it's not enough just to install 2.1 firmware. Follow Godzil's whole advice, format your Opus and then install 2.1. You don't need to fear any disadvantages from doing so, it won't break your device.

This one is the result of dmesg.....

Then:

PHP Code:
samuele@samuele-1215N:~$ cat /proc/partitionsmajor minor  #blocks  name

8        0  312571224 sda

   8        6   10482381 sda6
   8       16     996608 sdb
samuele
@samuele-1215N:~$
This the result of looking for partitions (note sdb).

If I do "umount" this is the reply...

PHP Code:
samuele@samuele-1215N:~$ umount /dev/sdb
umount
: /dev/sdb is not mounted (according mtab)
samuele@samuele-1215N:~$
Then is not possible to go on formatting....

PHP Code:
samuele@samuele-1215N:~$ sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 -"Cybook" /dev/sdb
[sudopassword for samuele
mkfs.vfat 3.0.9 (31 Jan 2010)
mkfs.vfatDevice partition expectednot making filesystem on entire device '/dev/sdb' (use -I to override)

Well thanks to another forum we solved it. The problem is thereis a partition table in the inner memory.
If in the terminal you write:
$ cat /proc/partitions

And the output shows sdb and sdb1 It means that there is a partition table, the solution is removing it by:

sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=/tmp/sdb.dump bs=1024k count=1024

and then formatting the sdb in fat32 with these commands:

sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 -n "Cybook Opus" -s 8 /dev/sdb
or if the output is:

mkfs.vfat 3.0.9 (31 Jan 2010)
mkfs.vfat: Device partition expected, not making filesystem on entire device '/dev/sdb' (use -I to override)

then you add -I to the last:

sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 -n "Cybook Opus" -s 8 -I /dev/sdb

Following this the Opus works again.

I am supposed to make a correction:
the command dd only read and copy a partition.
The real solution is:

sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 -n "Cybook Opus" -s 8 -I /dev/sdb

-I is really important due to this fact:

-I It is typical for fixed disk devices to be partitioned so, by
default, you are not permitted to create a filesystem across the
entire device. mkdosfs will complain and tell you that it
refuses to work. This is different when using MO disks. One
doesn't always need partitions on MO disks. The file system can
go directly to the whole disk. Under other OSes this is known
as the 'superfloppy' format.

This switch will force mkdosfs to work properly.

Hi, I've the same problem: the Opus doesn't see the books on the internal storage but only on microSD.
I formatted the internal storage with all kind of formatting indicated in this thread and in other threads:
- using gParted;
- with sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 -n "Cybook Opus" -s 8 -I /dev/sdb1
- simply with mkfs.vfat -l /dev/sdb1
- with Computer desktop icon --> Right click on Opus, Format in Windows XP.
In all the above cases, i succeeded in formatting; then I start the Opus, it asks me the language and I can see the directory sBooks, Picture, etc in the device.
But, when I see the internal storage with PC, it's empty, there aren't directories.
I tried to create directories and load a book but Opus doesn't see it...it seems that the directories that the Opus shows doesn't match with the directories that I created and that I can see in PC's File Manager.
I also installed the firmware afresh but the problem persist...what can I do?!
Thanks a lot.

When did you do that? This should be your next step immediately after formatting the device.
And if really nothing helps: send the Opus back. Ask for a replacement or a refund, maybe there is something wrong with the hard disk of the Opus.
And did you create a folder "ebooks" to store your books in?

Welcome to Mobileread, themind24!

I resolved the problem with these steps:
- delete table partition in internal storage:
Code:
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1
(my problem was to skip this step)
- make new file system with:
Code:
 sudo mkfs.vfat -F32 -n "Cybook Opus" -s 8 -I /dev/sdb
Now all works

Thanks all!

If you have "sdb1" it that because you make a partition table on the device, and it can't work. You have to use is as a whole device partition (ie on sdb) like sdcard, usbkey or floppy
