It's pretty neat once you get the hang of it. I'm still a bit overwhelmed by inkscape. I'm finding tutorials hard to come by. The ones that are out there seem to be above my head. I've tried. I just can't get the hang of it ... not yet at least. I'm finding GIMP much easier for the basic stuff that I'm doing. My Beyond the Black cover was made using fonts from dafont to serve as illustrations. That's where my city and silhouette came from. I wish I could do it by hand, but - well, not yet.
I still can't get my gradients as crisp as Dusty and most of my stuff seems to come out dirtier. And, as you can see from the Blue/Green BtB cover, they look rather - canned still. |

Using Gradient overlays seems to do the trick for me a lot of the time, instead of gradient fills on a selection. Create a new layer, use the gradient fill tool on the toolbar as highlighted, and then play about with the blending modes. |

I don't know why I didn't think to play with it like that! I've just been using the gradient on the background layer.
I just loaded the gimp on my iMac. What a difference 14" of screen real estate makes compared to my laptop! Now I need to figure out how to draw mars and the moon |

Version 2....
This is the closest I could come to making a dome for the city. But, when I hit the gradient on the circled part it decided to fill everything but what was circled. Wish I could have cropped the trees out of the soldier picture too. But, how's this compared to the other one? Last edited by jaxx6166; 05-19-2010 at 07:41 PM. |

It's all getting there, but the blends are off...and you need to make the title 'pop' for a cover like this (rule of thumb: 150px resize, see if you can still read the title). For a dome.. don't try and fill the entire structure, just partly and bring down the opacity... Give me a few minutes and I'll do one in Gimp and upload piccies. EDIT: Okay that was getting way too involved and way too many piccies. Follow this guide here to make a glass orb and then place orb over city in your illustration http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/orbs/orbs.htm BETTER TUTORIAL and Gimp focused here: http://www.viddler.com/explore/Protocol/videos/9/ Last edited by Dusty Bottoms; 05-19-2010 at 08:12 PM. |

Well...I lost that one. Forgot to save it until it was too late, now all I have is the PNG I uploaded. Oh well. Back to the drawing board for that one. Thanks for the tutorial. I think this is my last one for the night...The image looks better in XCF, I'm still trying to get my colors right.
Why is there a blue line? There shouldn't be... |

Blends are when you apply a certain mode to a layer, to blend one layer into another (overlay, burn, grain merge etc). You can get some wickedly cool effects just from some texture layers that are blended the right way over a really bland illustration. There's no real 100% rule with how to do your blends. I work accidentally, so I just throw all my ideas together and start messing around with stuff until I get something I like.
Remember that mars illustration thing I did in another thread? That was all done with blends, and the red planet image was done with the same stock photo of mars you have there desaturated and all the black and white levels adjusted. Last edited by Dusty Bottoms; 05-19-2010 at 09:54 PM. |

I gave up on making things complicated. Here's V3. Simple. Plain. Done. I've hacked apart the square ends. So now it's just a perfect circle in the middle of the sea..
The blue lines were a border I accidentally created. It's gone now +) Last edited by jaxx6166; 05-20-2010 at 12:14 AM. |
