Which books would recommend a Jack Vance newbie start with?
I would recommend The Dragon Masters but I'm interested in other recommendations.

Emphyrio, of course.

Actually, I have a lot of personal favorites. The Dragon Masters is not one of my favorites actually. I find it a bit childish.
Other favorites:
- Tschai
- The World Between aka Ecological Onslaught (short story, I know)
- Chateau d'If aka New Bodies for Old (again, short story)
- The Rapparee aka Space Pirates aka Five Golden Bands
- The Languages of Pao
- The Demon Princes
- The Cugel stories

Actually, much much more. There are actually only a few I don't like.

Depends on the age of the newbie. "Vandals of the Void" is a nice one for younger readers, otherwise "Tschai", "Lyonesse" and "Emphyrio" will definitely get you hooked. "Maske:Thaery" is also very nice. And of course the four Dying Earth novels and if you're into languages "The Language of Pao".

Jack Vance is a writer that requires a science fiction "head" to really enjoy. His "best" work are the most difficult for a newbie to get into. (Stop pitching brickbats, fans, I'm buying each and ever one from Splatterlight as the come out!)

For the total newbie, the novelette Rumfuddle is the best starting point. Not too long, and very "now" driven. (In the collection The Moon Moth and Other Stories.)

After (or instead, if one has to have a novel first), I recommend The Rapparee (which I read as The Five Golden Bands). It has everything the series have, but boiled down into 1 moderate length novel.

After that, go anywhere. I will note I consider both The Dragon Masters and The Last Castle advanced reads for his style.

The first Jack Vance book I read was actually Tschai. It was a bundled book in a very cheap promotion print with a very beautiful map. It got me hooked allright... The next one was a bundled version of the Demon Princes. I was a fan for life.

I also very much like the Cadwal-series, Magnus Ridolph and a lot of his short stories.

The VIE was way out of my budget, but the e-books will creep in my collection slowly. I want them all, but that will take time...

I already bought the Tschai novels earlier. Oh, well. As long as it will lead to more readers of Vance's work.
