Unless we are going to restrict the book club choices by price/geo restriction etc etc, I think we are always going to struggle to get books that are available everywhere to all the MR members - it's just the nature of the beast that we all discuss at length in other threads. I guess that's a decision for the originators of the Book Club.

True, and I don't really mind if the voted book is not available in Australia... Most members are from USA, I believe.

But I see that Thirty-Nine Steps has caught up with Shutter Island, so there's hope for me, yet...

39 steps, shorter and free. Opportunity. But I'll read Dead(ish) for a matter of principle.
I take this occasion to make a motion:

let's read authors that belong to MR. In how many session it is necessary. If in one year there be month left than we will divide them among the traditional categories.
Who agrees to this motion just ring the bell.

I voted 39 steps, shorter and free. Good friends there too. I'll read Dead(ish) for reason of principle

I take this occasion to float a motion

Motion: The Book Club will read books by MR authors. In how many months it will be decided. In the residual months let us read the others.

If somebody likes this idea just make it known.

First time for me participating in this. I have to say that in my opinion the choices should be limited to books that are available everywhere and at no cost. There are something like 10,000 such books right here so that cannot be that difficult to find a broad selection of such titles that will give everyone something worthwhile to consider. Unless part of the intent of the monthly book club is to support MR authors, in which case pardon me.

So 39 Steps it was for me.

Good thoughts.....I think the intent is really just to read together as a group (given the monthly topic). Sure free or easily available are considerations and are considered when nominated and in the voting. All just in good literary fun and sharing I think..

Yes. Failure to do so will result in the removal of all Karma acquired to date. It's one of the lesser known rules.

I am up to about page 665, getting there. This last part has been a bit more interesting. The ship is anchored, Ayrton has jumped off and all hell is about to break loose...

Oh, yes. The Last part rocks! Have you figured out who the mysterious benefactor is yet?

Spoiler:
No, it's not Slartibartfast!

If you think that's strict, wait until you discover what punishments the Mods here mete out for staying on topic in the Corrupt-A-Topic (anymore off-topic and it would be on-topic) thread!

The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan has a three vote lead! If it wins, it will be the first time since I began participating in the Book Club thread that the book I voted for won!

Go Thirty-Nine Steps!
