Pablo is my real name. I omit my surname, it would add nothing here.
I use my full name in some professional forums.

Given that this is the Writer's forum, I interpreted the question to be referring to the name under which people publish books. Perhaps the OP could clarify.

My mistake - I was vague. I did mean for publishing books, and have edited the first comment to clarify.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Sorry, I didn't notice it was in the Writer's forum. I thought this thread was a sort of follow-up of a comment in another thread, where someone was said to be "hiding behind the mask of anonymity". I had in fact been thinking of starting a thread on the topic, when I saw this one.

I write non-fiction and part of my credibility comes from what I did for a living. The first book was a how-to for criminal investigators and my last a memoir –thus I really couldn't publish under a pen name. But I do appreciate living anonymously –note I post using a nickname. Recently I was asked to talk about my last book in front of the local Rotary Club and I passed. And that might sound crazy to other authors but I live in a small town of 3,000 and I'd rather live here as "me". Had the offer come from outa town, I would have jumped on it.

Make any sense?

If that's your real name on the cover in your avatar photo, I think your secret's out. Unless you publish under your real name and and LIVE under a pseudonym!

For myself, the few non-fiction pieces I've published have been under my real name.
If I ever try my hand at fiction, I might choose a pen name, partially because my real last name is not that easy to read or remember, but also because, if it flops, I can throw the name away and start again with an unblemished reputation.

I went with my real name for this series for one simple reason. It's easier. If I switch genres I might go with a pen name though.

Pseudonym for me because my first name is very hard for non-Portuguese speaking people to say. If not for that, I'd use my real name. That and the fact no one can spell it - not even my brother! I kept my last name and my first name - Suzanna - is actually fairly close to the Anglicized pronunciation of my name. A few people IRL who can't wrap their brains around how to pronounce my name actually do call me that.

Very few of us are "Brad Pitts" or "George Zimmermans" so our needs for privacy and anonymity aren't extreme though they can still be strong.

I find that not being a part of the discussion about "me" lets me have objectivity as well as a certain tranquility. Likewise anonymity shields your lax faux pas incidents from your paying customers.

Lastly (tongue in cheek of course) there might be the opportunity to run for office some day and we must be sure that we have not left any embarrassing moments laying about in our history that some scurrilous reporter might find.

Real name, but my name (Adam Bender) is pretty easy to spell and pronounce. Maybe I'd use a different one if that were not the case. Or if I wrote something truly embarrassing.

I haven't published anything yet, but I'm really not sure I want to use my real name for my first book because it's not exactly what I consider my main genre. It needs a new title too, and it's a way off (self-)publication yet.

Edit: (Off-topic) I have wondered what the best name to have embossed in huge gold type on an airport thriller might be. I reckon Brad Thor has it covered.

"Bradley Thor" sounds more literary.

I can imagine that people who write porn (sorry, we're supposed to call it "erotica" now, aren't we?) might well want to do so under a pen-name.
