But only if the PDF is not DRM-protected. If the PDF cannot be printed from Adobe Acrobat, then it is probably DRM-protected and cannot be viewed on a Sony reader. I know you know that but we sometimes forget to tell people that part of it.

Adobe PDF ebooks you pay for like that are chock full of nice DRM goodies that the Sony Reader 500/505 just does not enjoy and will not deal with. However, MS Reader format is not so full of DRM that the DRm cannot be removed. In fact, you can remove the DRM from a LIT file and use lit2lrf to easily convert to LRF. You could also use Book Designer if you wanted, but lit2lrf is easier to use in this case. And yes, have a look around and you'll find out how to remove the DRm from MS Reader files so you can convert and enjoy on your reader.

Yes, you do want the MS Reader format as long as you are setup to be able to remove the DRM. |

Say Jon, since Ricavision is putting up a Vista dependant reader, do you think Microsoft will change the .lit to something not as easily broken?

I don't see why they should. The tools to remove the DRM enhancement from LIT files have been around for years. I suspect that the overwhelming majority of users either aren't bothered by it, or don't have the technical know-how to deal with it.

But wouldn't you think the publishings houses using the .lit format would start to object to the poor protection they get? In their shoes I would probably migrate to an other format, then Microsoft, after losing customers, could feel the pressure and beef up security?

Yes, I would have thought so. Just goes to show that the thought processes of publishers are not like those of us mere mortals. DRM is just "symbolic" - we all know that. Perhaps, though, that's all it needs to be?

That's a good thought. Similar to the saying " A lock is only meant to keep an honest man out".

Removing DRM might not be legal, it depends on where you live. Overall, we need to encourage these companies to collaborate rather than compete for space on our Readers.
