A killing in kensington

A Killing in Kensington (A Patrick Shea Mystery)by Mary Lydon Simonsen is free today on the UK. I have tried to add a link above not sure if it worked!

Detective Sergeant Patrick Shea of London's Metropolitan Police and his new partner, Detective Chief Inspector Tommy Boyle, have been handed a high-profile murder case. In the penthouse of Kensington Tower, playboy Clifton Trentmore lay dead with his head bashed in, and the investigation reveals a man who was loathed by both sexes. With too few clues and too many suspects, Shea and Boyle must determine who hated Trentmore enough to kill him. But as Patrick digs deeper, he finds his suspects have secrets of their own.

A Killing in Kensington is the second in the Patrick Shea mystery series.

If you enjoy Law and Order UK, you will enjoy A Killing in Kensington.

Generally, so are those by the larger publishers (not so the "self-pubbed", which are often just ripped off gutenberg ocr scans).

Ripped off from Gutenberg I can live with as a complaint. But please don't knock Gutenberg, which is proofread and consistently formatted. I know, I have done some. Simple, plain vanilla, yes. In order to be available, free, to everyone on any computer however obsolete.

Thanks, Piperclassique, for your contribution to the Gutenberg project. An excellent service, with a great goal! And thanks for reminding us not to lump it together with low-quality classic 'retreads'.

+1

If a "rip-off" ebook looks like a bad OCR from page scans it is almost certainly from a source other than Project Gutenberg. While I don't always like the PG formatting, I've never had issues with the quality of the conversion, even back in their ancient TXT epoch.

The ones I've suffered thru were both, with the gutenberg notice embedded in the ripped off copy.

No doubt their quality on some titles has gone up in recent years, but there is also a lot of dreck in the catalog (where it will remain unless rescanned and properly proofed).

the same is true of some other scanning projects, of course.

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or on the thread NightBird started for the Severn House Digital sale - but maybe more people track this thread...
Anyway, while looking through the Severn titles, I discovered one author who still has current titles under their imprint, but looks like the first four in his series are now self-pub on Amazon,. Set in Blackpool, originally published in the UK by Headline, $1.52 ea.

Nick Oldham's Henry Christie series:

A Time for Justice
A TIME FOR JUSTICE is the first in Nick Oldham’s fast paced, highly acclaimed crime thrillers featuring Henry Christie and is now available for the first time in e-format...
As far as mafia hitman Jimmy Hinksman is concerned, working in Britain is a piece of cake. In his opinion, the police are unarmed amateurs and security is nowhere – at least that’s what he tells his boss, Mr Corelli. Which is how Hinksman can clamp a Semtex bomb to a Daimler in a Lancaster hotel car park unobserved. The Daimler is due to take two associates of Mr Corelli to Manchester airport – Mr Corelli does not intend them to get there in one piece.
The car is in heavy traffic on the M6 when the explosion takes place. Seventy-two vehicles are involved in the carnage. The death toll is in double figures. Unfortunately for Hinksman, only one of them was intentional – his other victim was too busy with a girlfriend to start the journey.
Now Hinksman himself is a target, wanted by every cop in the force. And if he doesn’t complete the job he’s begun, Mr Corelli will be after him too.
Hinksman is also about to discover that not all British security is a joke and not every British copper a clown. Especially not disgraced detective Henry Christie, a man with a point to prove and - after the M6 bombing – nothing left to lose...

This is a repeat freebie that I actually got around to reading and enjoyed.

Surface Tension (Seychelle Sullivan #1) by Christine Kling.
Quote:
From Library Journal
Salvage boat operator Seychelle Sullivan has a good reason to rush to the rescue of a beleaguered yacht: an old flame is the hired skipper. Complicating matters, though, is the dead body onboard. A much-touted debut.

Nice. I've been looking out for that one, as I seem to have picked up some later books in the series in earlier promotions, and I hate missing the start.

Thanks for the "reader review" Synamon! I already had this in my pile, since I thought it looked interesting last time. With a recommendation, it'll move up my TBR list!

Estreme Instinct by Robert W. Walker free today on Amazon (US).

I downloaded this book today and when I launched K4PC to read it, it came up as a cookbook (Decadent Desserts). I checked my Kindle library and the cover for Extreme Instinct is showing there, plus the confirmation email I received from Amazon lists the title I 'purchased' as Extreme Instinct.

The cookbook is $2.99; otherwise, I'd d/l it just to see if my mystery title appears instead lol.
