Turgenev, Ivan S.: Der Duellant - german V.1 - 11.07.2009

Ivan Sergejevich Turgenev

Geboren am 09.11.1818 in Oryol (Ukraine), gestorben am 03.09.1883 in Bougival, nahe Paris.

Turgenev war der Sohn reicher Landbesitzer. Nach dem damals üblichen Hausunterricht für Kinder adliger Familien studierte er in Moskau, Sankt Petersburg und Berlin, und war nach Abschluß seiner Studien kurze Zeit als Staatsbeamter in Sankt Petersburg tätig. 1843 veröffentlichte er sein erstes Gedicht (Paraša), das von der Kritik gut aufgenommen wurde. Ab 1855 hielt Turgenev sich zumeist im Ausland auf, 1863 wählte er Baden-Baden zu seinem ständigen Wohnsitz. In Deutschland lernte Turgenev Theodor Storm, Eduard Mörike, und Gustav Freytag kennen. In Paris, wo er sich nach 1871 niederließ, traf er u. a. mit George Sand, Gustave Flaubert, Émile Zola, Prosper Mérimée und Henry James zusammen.

Im Gegensatz zu den anderen beiden großen russischen Schriftstellern seiner Zeit, Tolstoi and Dostojewski, war nicht Religion sein zentrales Thema, sondern Leid der in Leibeigenschaft lebenden Bauern, wie er es auf dem elterlichen Gut hatte beobachten können. Goethes Werther inspirierte ihn zu der Erzählung 'Faust'.
