Kindle 2 Under Reports by 20 MB
Just an FYI, I've noticed that my Kindle 2 is now reporting 45 MB free, even though when connected via USB it shows 65MB free. Perhaps it's reserving 20MB for workspace such as annotations or clippings.

I know it needs work space; what's unusual is that it's intentionally underreporting disk space. Nothing would stop you from filling up the Kindle to -20MB via USB (although I suspect it just says 0).

It must store the indexing information somewhere, too.

It does, but indexes (mine anyway) use up far more than 20MB. The point is it reports less space than is REALLY there.
