24 Hours with new PRS 700 - First Impressions

Just received my PRS 700 (late Christmas present). I've been a 500 user since it was released. Got a second 500 when Sony did the 'Get a Sony credit card and a PRS200 for only 50 bucks' promotion. I love my 200 so skipped the 505. Jumped right for the 700 on it's introduction (pre-order). Then I started reading the first ominous posts here in the MobileRead forum. Figured I'd wait and see and now I've seen. First off the display. For me it's pretty straight forward:

PRS-500 - Black text on a dark grey back ground
PRS-S05 - Black text on a white back ground
PRS-700 - Black text on a light grey back ground

That's a let down as the 505 proves that e-reading can be as seamless an experience as reading a paper book. For me, I'm there to read not annotate, search, organize or play flash light which is what the 700 gives me in exchange for a demoted display.

Second Let down. I really wanted the Adobe reflow/zoom to work with my A4 tech drawings. It doesn't. I don't blame Sony or Adobe, they are just not compatible or it's not possible.

Summing up:

Side lighting - I can read in the dark now
Touch Screen - Evolutionary. I was hoping for the Iphone experience
Speed - Fast, Very fast

Will I keep the PRS700? You betcha, I love technology.

Hi Hughdal,

I was also initially disappointed with the screen contrast coming from a PRS-505 that suffered a broekn screen but still showed better contrast than the PRS-700. However after a few weeks the extra features of the PRS-700 are enough to convince me it is a better device.

The speed, the touch screen (I actually use the TOC and footnotes now) and backlight (I never used to read in bed with the PRS505) are all great features.

Sure I wish Sony could have kept the screen quality of the PRS505 and I suspect they will improve this on the next model, but for now this is best reader for me and I am sure you will also being to love it even more over the coming weeks.

Cheers,
Marcus
