Similar to shutting down Napster, that was HUGE in the way of stopping music downloads...when a site is taken down it is just a grain of sand on the beach in the grand scheme of things. I equate sites like library.nu to Napster...it's what the common folk use...

But, haven't you heard, each and every copy of an e-book costs as much as a hard cover to produce. I think the pirates are secretly going broke trying to reproduce all those files.

i just love when i hear people like video game manufacturers/publishers bemoaning piracy and used game sales. "oh piracy is killing us, oh gamestop is worse than hitler" while remaining mysteriously silent on the fact that they top their sales year after year. every year its record profits and sales but damn gamestop won't stop stealing food out of their mouths! the newest call of duty alone only made a mere BILLION dollars worth of sales in its first month. oh the poor dears!

"Video game sales are expected to grow from $66 billion worldwide in 2010 to $81 billion by 2016."

http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/07/wi...016-exclusive/

piracy is killing them! somebody had better do something!

the 'top tier' of entertainment will always sell. always. its the mid range guys who get screwed but they've been getting screwed by their publishers all along as it is. pirate sites probably do more to get their name out their than their own pubs anyway.

heres book stats-

"Overall U.S. publishing revenues are growing
Publishers’ net sales revenue has grown annually; 2010’s $27.94 Billion is a 5.6% increase over 2008.

Overall U.S. publishing unit sales are up as well
Publishers’ 2.57 Billion net units sold in 2010 represent a 4.1% increase since 2008.

Americans, young and old, are reading actively in all print and digital formats
2010 total net sales revenue in the consumer-focused Trade market is $13.94 Billion, increasing 5.8% since 2008 (and excluding 2011’s e-book sales surge). Both Adult Fiction and Juvenile (non-fiction and fiction) have seen consistent annual gains."

http://www.publishers.org/press/44/

thats not even including the massive surge in ebooks lately. sales are up up up but people continue to buy into the hand-wringing and piracy scare tactics. i just don't get it. their own numbers betray their lies.

movies-

"Although a recent National Crime Prevention Council ad campaign tries to make the point that piracy kills jobs, the CRS found that total gross revenues and box office receipts have doubled in the last 15 years. Grosses went from $52.8 billion in 1995 to $104.4 billion in 2009, while box office receipts went from $5.3 billion in 1995 to $10.6 billion in 2010 — yet hiring still went down."

"One thing that has gone up, higher than ever, is executive pay. The CRS report noted that News Corporation paid CEO Rupert Murdoch $33,292,753 in 2011; Viacom gave CEO Philippe Dauman made $84,515,308; Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes took home $26,303,071; while Disney CEO Robert A. Lger earned $29,617,964. Sony CEO Howard Stringer was at the bottom of the bunch at $4.3 million, having taken a 14 percent pay cut due to losses."

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/12/1...ear-mongering/

they DOUBLED their profits yet didn't hire anyone and somehow find the gall to blame piracy for their greed?

thats 3 examples of industries clearly seeing growth and profits in a 'culture of piracy'. how long must the charade continue?

Okay the 'common folks' who occasionally download books because it is not in some e-format and they own a tree copy...I forgot to clarify.

What an astoundingly weak argument. NO anti-social activity is stopped by enforcement. Giving out tickets for staying twenty minutes past the limit in a one hour parking spot will never stop that behavior either. And you can't quantify how much businesses lose when on-street spots are filled up by long-term parkers. But I still think parking regulations are by and large reasonable and should be enforced.

Something similar -- enforcement will never stop crime -- is true for every act of disrespect for law ranging all the way from murder to shoplifting a book otherwise destined to be pulped.

Quote:
I don’t think they want to fight it so much that they’ll change their entire distribution model on a dime, which would actually go a long way toward truly competing with piracy.
Well, no. Similarly, a central city storekeeper may not dislike a day-long parker in front of her shop enough to become a web business, or move to the suburbs. So?

If you guys want to treat it like a parking ticket, I'm with you. Kim Dotcom getting probation will not upset me. But asking for proof of harm is impossible and unreasonable.

There had better be. If the publishers are going to follow the *AA "whack-a-mole" model and try cutting off various heads of the Hydra then they're going to need those increased sales to pay for the lawyers and politicians.

Probably worth it though, it worked well for the *AA's didn't it? And those executive salaries listed above have to be earned somehow.

Again, the issue is people consuming without paying. If people are right in saying that piracy users wouldn't have consumed this stuff if it weren't free, fine; but if they aren't going to pay they don't deserve the content. Nobody is going to regret the fact that a bunch of cheapskates are disappointed.

What is your point exactly? That authors don't deserve to be paid?

True. But what expenses have increased in that time period? Only when you look at both sides of the equation can you make a judgement.
