I was a big fan of Piers Anthony in my teens. I might have to grab this for nostalgia's sake.
Edit: It is also free on the UK Kindle store. Also, I feel I need to add that I was never a fan of Xanth. Last edited by DrNefario; 02-04-2012 at 10:59 AM. |

Nat a fan of Xanth but I have fond memories of the Space Tyrant series. Glad to pick it up so cheap.

Some of the negative reviews mention that there's a lot of rape, pedaphilia, and incest in this book, some of it fairly graphic.

The blurb comment on Amazon, "But the space travelers had not reckoned on the terrible threat of high space-the pirates, barbaric men who rape, rob, and murder, with no thought but to satisfy their bestial appetites. It will take all Hope's ingenuity to survive, but the atrocities he witnesses will never die," makes it appear that this is necessary to the plot and development of those characters. Since I haven't read the book, I can't comment on how true or graphic that is. |

And much of what I did read seemed rather tangential or outright gratuitous to the actual plot/characterization going on around it (alternatively, sometimes the fetishism/weird gender relations/skeevy sexual consent issues were the driving core of the plot/character, especially with some of the short stories). But anyway, the first book is free at all the Amazons so it wouldn't hurt to get it regardless. Though I would very strongly advise reading it in full before spending money on the others if one is not already acquainted with Mr. Anthony's writing quirks because they do tend to be the kind of thing that elicits unhappy reactions if you don't already know going in what the stuff he puts in his stories can sometimes be like. |

Thank you for your comments.
I read like I eat. If I am in the mood for chocolate caramel and bite into a raspberry cream, I am not happy. I feel the same with a book. If I am in the mood to be immersed in a story of science fiction, mystery, or whatever, I am not happy if I have pages of filler thrown in that doesn't advance the plot. It's free and I can always try his writing, now that I know what to expect. |

I don't think I'll be picking this up. I read the entire series in high school - and this one has the distinction of being the only volume I didn't read more than once. I read all the others three or four times, but for Vol. 1, once was enough for me.

I remember liking this series, and it was one of the first significant set of SF novels I recall reading. I recall some rather risque content, which probably drew me in, as I think I was in high school at the time, but can't recall anything especially deviant. I never got in to Piers Anthony beyond this series, though. Nice to pick it up for free.

The first book is actually quite grim, and kind of at odds with the rest of the series.
There is some fairly graphic sex, I think, and like ApK that was probably partly why I was a fan as a young teenager. |
