Hya, Jon and Queentess:
With the best will in the world, ghere's something vital you're missing here ... Amazon and Sony are NOT publishers. They are merely manufacturers and retailers. Each in its own way limits availability of legitimately published books so that store and device are almost a closed circuit. In some cases, this may be excused by international copyright issues, in most it's purely a matter of establishing a monopoly. Neither of these comanies has the slightest say in what a publisher produces -- just in whether or not its in their newly-discovered interests (with devices tied to private bookstores) to offer it for sale in a free marketplace. What would be really good is if they let me move the registration of my existing Kindle from Amazon US to Amazon UK. Somehow I doubt it.

Well hopefully soon, Europe is the next logical step, then Australia and other smaller countries.
It's indicative of how backwards publishers are, Amazon has to go through their licensing minefield to get it into Europe DESPITE the fact publishers would make more money from it. |

My guess is the issue is probably not the publishers, but securing the wireless network deals, at a price Amazon is willing to pay. |

I would think if Amazon was to launch the Kindle in the UK, they'd have had a press release by now. So we can take this rumor as untrue.
