Not able to access actual epub files?
I was doing a little bit of poking around on the barnes and nobles website forums. A few people on there mentioned that the actual ebook files are hidden on the nooktouch! So that means you couldn't copy them onto your computer as a back up. That totally sucks!
Is there a way to download the barnes and noble for pc or mac app and get your files that way? If not this is a total deal breaker for me! Or is rooting the answer? |

But it is true that purchased items are not visible when you connect the nook touch to the PC. |

Just to expand on what afv011 said, you should download and install Nook for PC and follow instructions. Once you have done that you can access all your purchased B&N books via that program. The epub files themselves are then on your PC, although it is kind of meaningless to have them, IMHO.
You are backed up by the B&N website. There doesn't seem to be much point in backing them up yourself, IMHO, since you are beholding to B&N for access to them as long as they have DRM on them. Amazon and Kindle are the same in this respect. The only really reliable way to backup your epubs independent of B&N is to remove the DRM from them, making them plain epub files. Then you can back them up yourself in a meaningful way. Some would argue that this is a valid reason for DRM removal. Search this forum and use an internet search to find out how to do this if you are interested. |

Accessing B&N books on other readers
I read somewhere today that it is possible to view B&N purchased books on other readers if they support the B&N DRM scheme (Kobo was mentioned) simply by entering in the name and the CC number used to purchase it as the password. Has anyone tried this?

As I never tire of saying (because the myth persists), it is not B&N locking you in, it is the other Adobe DRM vendors locking you out. |

A portion of the internal memory is reserved for B&N books downloaded over wireless. They save money by making them inaccessible in this manner, since it doesn't require application of Adobe DRM and the consequent server transaction fees. Kobo does the same thing but with a different implementation.

Remove the DRM using deDRM. Use calibre to remove poorly-chosen publisher-set margins and fonts while you are at it.
Then you can read the books you bought on anything... Last edited by EldRick; 06-18-2011 at 02:05 AM. |
