World largest 19" flexible ePaper from LG Display

Hottest IT issue now in Korea is the announcement of the World Largest Flexible ePaper by LG Display.

It's announced yesterday at Seoul. LG Display claimed for the development of 19" ePaper, yet as flexible as X-ray film. The 0.3 mm thin layer backed up with thin foil and TFT array made this display flexible. LG Display successfully debuted at 2010 CES through Skiff reader, which got immediate attention. Same technology is used for the Skiff reader. LG Display is going to start to have mass production of 11.5" display for Skiff reader during the first and second quarter of this year.

19" display is 8 times bigger than 6" like Kindle, PRS-505. The applications of this size of ePaper may be in various fields, not only for new paper reader, but for flexible advertisement panel. With this flexibility, this can go to the round surface.

Impact on eReader? It's hard to predict. It's interesting concept that can hold tabloid size of material, but portability may LARGELY limited by THAT size. It will be great, however, to use as newspaper reader for your own living room. Who knows?

They can fit an entire 802.11 unit in an SD card now-I'm sure they can hide one on there somewhere

It's not clear, but

The press release say that they put Gate-drive IC circuit in the panel, not separate. That usually limit the actual bending. I am not sure how they manage data transfer unit, but I guess they are going to put wireless or minimum size of side-loading port,, like USB.

LG didn't start with this nor on CES with Epaper display. Sony already used LG display for the PRS-600 and PRS-300 (and I don't know for the latest 700/505 made)

By the way, what they show are not device, but only screen with something that was displayed on it

Are you sure?

In sonystyle webpage, they clearly say PRS-600 and 300 has Vizplex, which is trademark of PVI. Also, LG Display didn't claimed for that.

This is not the finished device. They didn't say that they made newspaper reader device. They only claimed for the development of 19"" display, not the device. This ePaper already got electric part for operating in the panel, so I guess it's very close to finish as a device, though.

Thanks for comment.

Vizplex is the Eink film, not the backplane. LG make "standard" Eink display like PVI does, and they are the one used inside PRS600 and PRS300. Just look at the services manual of theses device you will see that the screen are not PVI's one. And there is only one other manufacturer of 5 and 6 inch screen:
LG

I see what you mean.

Yes, that's very true. I know Vizplex is a panel, not a circuit. E-ink now owned by PVI, and LG tied up with PVI as a partner. I think it's natural to say 600 and 300 panel by PVI, but manufactured or assembled by LG. But, I guess it's not fair to say LG Display already debuted with their own name with PRS series.

Thanks for info.

I agree, and there is a nice illustration at Plastic Logic. The details will be different for the flexible LG display, but both are innovating at the backplane level not the epaper film level (and both are presumably using EInk Vizplex film).

The original Sony Librie was built using Phillips Eink displays before PVI bought the rights from Phillips. Phillips is now LG/Phillips.

Nope, I assure that LG make their own backplane with Eink front plane and are sell as LG Display, not PVI.

Neat technology but do newspapers really need to be that big? The size just seems impractical and I don't see a reason for it other than tradition. Even the current paper ones have been moving to a smaller size.

And what happens if it accidentally gets folded? Seems like a neat thing, but highly impractical, unless you like carrying around unwieldy 19 inch sheets of e-paper that cannot be folded.
