Thank you for the link. I appreciate the EFF and I didn't know they have this guide.

But what do you mean by learn from the USA Wikileaks experience? Learn what?

Is the device ONLY compatible with books purchased from an associated eBook store?
Amazon Kindle Yes
Only Amazon's proprietary AZW and unprotected TXT, MOBI, PRC files are directly compatible with Kindle. Kindles also have PDF support. Amazon also allows publishers to offer books without DRM.
What do they mean by "only compatible" and "associated ebook store"? It makes it sound like Kindle is locked into Amazon, then lists a bunch of exceptions... It's more accurate to say that Kindle books are ONLY compatible with Kindle devices/apps. The reverse is not true. I would really like to draw a Venn diagram here.

Also, it's impossible for Amazon to know what you're reading if you keep the wireless turned off.

Yeah, I say turn the question around. Is the content from the ebook store readable on other devices? Yes, Kindle books are readable on other devices, not all devices but a fair and growing number.

There's some information about what the Kindle reports to Amazon here:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51371

I'm assuming the GPS co-ordinates are just for the 3G version, but the rest of it is pretty scary too. Whoever it was said that Amazon doesn't know what you are reading and how quickly you read it obviously hasn't seen that thread. They also log whether your books are encrypted or not.

You really can't expect a layperson to look at a bunch of code and say "AHA! Amazon is EVIL!" So I will continue to not care and keep the wifi turned off.

These are the interesting parts, it seems easy enough to understand to me. I don't think keeping the wifi off will stop Amazon from getting it either, unless you never connect it to your computer while Kindle for PC is running.

This is great info. I wonder why other devices (like Kobo, which is attached to Boarders like Sony) aren't listed
