3G question for a dummy

I own the Wi-Fi 3G version of Nook. What does it gain me by having 3G if I can't use it anywhere? Is it really only capable of connecting to the internet in a Wi-Fi hotspot?

It lets you buy B&N books wirelessly (if you're in the USA). Yes, you can only browse the web via WiFi. Not that you're missing a lot - eInk screens are pretty horrible for web browsing, other than essentially text-only sites like Wikipedia.

Thank you! Do you think B&N will make it so the web will work on 3G on future upgrades??''

I agree it is not the best in terms of accessing the internet, but it would do in a pinch.

as stated the 3G allows you to shop and download wirelessly on the fly without having to connect to wi fi. 3G is an automatic connection where ever At&t 3G is within range, which is pretty much anywhere, though I sure their are some area's that are not covered, but for the most part most areas are covered.

as far as the internet on the nook? I find using a websites mobile ip address to work very well. Normal websites are a little frustrating.
I do like ESPN mobile on the nook. But mostly I use it to connect to wi fi hot spots that require some form of a sign in.

Not likely. The free 3G service is subsidised by the books bought from the B&N store. No one is going to give you free, unlimited 3G wireless access to the internet - you're dreaming.

That being said, if you root your Nook, and buy your own 3G service plan, you can use the 3G capability the way you want right now.

Amazon do exactly that with the Kindle.

Really? I understood that it was limited to the Amazon website, similar to how the Nook's is limited to the B&N website.

So you can browse the web for free, forever? No download restrictions, nothing?

No, it has no restrictions. You soon discover, though, the limitations of web browsing on an eInk screen. Sites that are essentially text only, such as Wikipedia, work OK. Most sites work very poorly if at all. Amazon really aren't giving all that much away.

Ok, I was wondering how they'd subsidise something like that. I guess they're just counting on people not using it.

It is described by Amazon as an "experimental" feature, with no guarantee that it will continue to remain free in the future.
