I would not want to be without 3G, and never turn it off. I look up things in wikipedia all the time (KT shows an article summary without needing to launch the browser), not to mention the lovely Report Content Error and Translate features, and am often reading where wifi doesn't exist or is too much trouble to connect to. It's not just about getting books from Amazon, though I do that sometimes as well.

I know when I upgraded my iPad and ditched the 3G, within a month I was kicking myself for being a cheapskate
I don't use it often on my kindle (I exist in a giant cloud of wifi) but as soon as I drop it I'll be posted somewhere with no landline Internet - guaranteed. Nikumaroro, here I come! |

I have a keyboard kindle with 3g. If I get the newest kindle, I will most likely get wifi. After all, I don't think 3G service will be that much help during the apocalypse, zombie or otherwise.

Answer: there's a 3G edition for $179 ($60 more than wifi only). So the 3G 'tax' is $10 more than before. For my requirements, I think it is still worth it (might feel otherwise if I were already paying for 3G and could tether wifi to that, but I don't right now). But I am still waiting for a 'Buy' button to appear...

I don't think they will forward without 3G.

I don't use 3G or Wi-Fi. I wouldn't mind a version without either. Keeping a model with at least 3G connection to the Amazon store is something they are unlikely to discontinue for the next few years at least.

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I only use wifi for downloading books and I am usually well stocked up. I have over a thousand books on my kindle and most of them I haven't read yet, so I can't imagine being away from home and needing to download a book. In the remote possibility that I needed to download something I'd use my phone as a wifi hot-spot and hook my kindle up to it.
In the UK there is now only one 3G capable version of the kindle for sale on the amazon website (Keyboard). I wonder if that means they are phasing out 3G over here. |
