Special Characters / Fonts

Hi folks,
I was wondering if it was possible to read text in a character set that the 1150 doesn't support out of the box. Specifically I would like to be able to add some documents written in Esperanto to my device. However there are several letters that have diacritics (such as circumflexes) and these letters only show up as question marks since presumably the fonts the 1150 uses don't have these special characters.

Does anyone know if it's possible to update the fonts on the 1150 to allow support for these characters?

Thanks!

Generally the eb1150 has good support for special characters. If you look at special characters in the wiki (or on the ETI web site) you will likely find the characters you want in the list. However, the character set methods such as Windows-1252 will not work on this device. Instead you must use the html codes to define the characters you need. Using a binary editor (or even the editor in eBook Publisher) to find and substitute the html codes for the 8-bit codes will likely solve your problem.

You may try TidyGUI for Windows users to get rid of those '?'. Open your Source file, click the 'Tidy!' button, then click the 'Show Output' button and 'Save as...'.

You can change the TidyGUI defaults by clicking the 'Configuration' button and then under the 'Encoding' tab choose the options that suit your needs.

Also, you may reference the Special Character Set at the eBook Technologies, Inc. website for which special characters are available to use in all eBook Editions.

For an example how these special characters look on the EBW 1150, see the second attachment, REBTestDocument_x-small.imp and go to page 17 to 25. The columns represent two entries per line of the "Char" "HTML code" and "Numeric Code" for the special character.

A quick test shows that working with Esperanto may be more difficult as shown by the attached example of the Esperanto Wiki page in .IMP formats. The Wiki .html was imported into MS Word and saved in .rtf format. The .rtf retains all the proper characters.

The ETI eBook Publisher 'Bulk Convert' program was then used to produce both .IMP formats below. It appears that manual intervention will be required.

Nick & Dale thanks very much for the information you posted. It looks like it will take some doing to get it working but at least I have a place to start now. If I can get it working I'll post the results here. Thanks again!
