Auto-update

Is it possible for developers to add auto-updating of Calibre? With the frequency of updates it's annoying to manually download 40 MB file each time... Another good idea would be some kind of delta updates, so it has to download only a small file with changes.

But you don't have to apply each update. Indeed, you probably SHOULDN'T apply each update. Kovid's advice is to look at the list of new/changed features, and only update if they have direct relevance to you.

This has been discussed before and Kovid has stated that across the board auto-updating is not an efficient use of bandwidth. He also said maintaining incremental updates across multiple platforms is too much work.

On the other hand I've read that if you run from source something similar to incremental updates is available to you.

My routine is usually to upgrade to the version BEFORE the latest one. This lets me check for any bugs (sometimes described as "regressions" in the changelog). The only exceptions, for me, would be a really amazing new feature but even then since Calibre is updated every week it is usually not much of a problem to wait till next Friday before upgrading.

That's a very sound way of doing it. I think I may take to doing it your way.
