7.2 issue with image links...

I just updated to 7.2.0 and immediately am finding that images of alternate covers, etc. are not displaying in the Preview, Details or when I Edit the eBook...

Most of the links are in the format

Code:
<p align="center"><a href="file:///E:/~eBooks/~~~~~Temp/Author-Title.jpg"><img src="file:///E:/~eBooks/~~~~~Temp/Author-Title.jpg" width="300"></a></p>
Calibre IS searching for them, as there's a slight pause when going into the edit screen, and also when going down the list in the main view (it's trying to load them, and eventually a plain white square is displayed in place of the image).

It was working fine yesterday, and no other changes have been made except the update.

I tried to roll back to 7.1.0, but the installer said I must first uninstall Calibre - Does that mean I'll lose all my settings and configurations and have to start from scratch?

Any help appreciated

No, a regular Control Panel uninstall will leave them in place, but avoid using any third party uninstallers.

Alrighty, Control Panel uninstall accomplished...

Installation of version 7.1.0 accomplished...

Problem still occurs...

Hmm...

I have done absolutely nothing to Calibre except that update, and have not made any system changes to my computer for a couple of weeks.
There was a Windows Update this morning, but I just checked and all it contained was some Security-related stuff, nothing that would cause this.

And, as I said, it was working fine yesterday! (yes, I've done a couple of reboots, just to make sure)

Running very few plugins:

DeDRM 7.2.1
Count Pages 1.13.4
Hyphenate This! 0.1.3
Smashwords Metadata 1.0.2
Kindle Hi0Res Covers 0.5.0

I'm stumpified.

Are you sure you were using 7.1 yesterday?

If you wanted to try an earlier version (e.g. 6.x), and avoid the uninstall/install merry-go-round, install the portable version, add an epub with the file:\\\ links into its library and see how it goes.

There's been some recent discussion on MR regarding the use of file links in epubs rather than embedding the files in the epub, but I can't recall which forum that was -- calibre, sigil, epub, or workshop.

Okay, I tried the portable versions of 7.1 and 7.0 - Same result.

Tried 6.29.0 and my images are back!

So now I guess I go in search of that discussion you mentioned and see if it can shed some light on the issue, perhaps there's some workaround.

If not, I'll just have to go back to 6.29.0 as I'm not willing to give up my 'Extras' in the catalog. Heck, I've worked too hard formatting everything like I like it (well, within the confines of what QT will allow in HTML, anyway).

Thank You for the help, BR

I tested displaying images using file:/// URLs as the image source on both linux and windows with 7.2 and its working in both the book details panel and the comments editor.

Here's the difference between Calibre 6.29.0 Portable (left) and Calibre 7.4.0 Installed (right).

Same library, same book; the alternate cover displays in the portable version, and does not in the installed version...

Here is the code I'm using:

Code:
<div>
<h3>12-year-old Marco Lippa is the star pitcher for his Little League baseball team…</h3>
<p>He does his best to lead his team to victory against their cross-town rivals, reveling in the cheering and applause. After one particular game, he becomes sick and is rushed to the hospital. Treated for meningococcal disease, Marco wakes up to discover that he is deaf—and all of his dreams seem to crumble.</p>
<p>Now Marco must come to terms with living in a silent world—and the grief, anger, and loss that seem to go with it. He is enrolled at the state boarding school for the deaf, leaving behind his comfortable home and his family and friends while he re-learns how to communicate and function without his hearing. As if that wasn't hard enough, he quickly discovers that being deaf does not exempt him from the "normal" anxieties he faced at home—bullies, girls, and fitting in.</p>
<p>Will he ever find his way back to his dreams?</p>

Windows 10 - up to date.

OK in portable version 6.29. Not OK in portable version 7.4.

Added: OK in installed version 7.4

Weird, here's the code:

Code:
<div>
<p>Image </p>
<p> </p>
<p><img src="file:///C:/Users/<xxxxxx>/Desktop/SaveTemp/Hollow-Log-Hide.jpg"></p></div>

Did some more tests, can't make head or tail of the results

Put the image into the books data folder didn't work on installed 7.4, copied the image to C:\Sandpit\ and it did work.

Suspect it may have something to do with the image cache issue we identified here ==>> Calibre 7.3/7.4 hangs during starting up

The cache is not involved with display of images in book details. Its cover grid only.

Yep, same library works fine in 6.29 Portable.

Inconsistent in 7.4.

Installed version (on C: internal SSD) is OK if image location is on C:, but not if it's on D: (internal HDD).

Portable version (on D:) is is OK if image location is on D:, but not if it's on C:.

If I delete an image file referenced in Comments it still shows in Book Details if I unselect (down arrow) and reselect (up arrow). Once I do a restart, library switch, search… or something similar, it disappears of course.

That's a separate Qt internal cache. I actually should investigate it to make sure it isnt leaking memory. I dont trust Qt at all.
