When my daughter was 13 we refurbished an old Compaq laptop that we got at a computer fair, loaded a Linux distro, tweaked it, etc. She's comfortable with technology, and loves to read, but says she isn't interested in ereaders. Since she was nearing college age (she just started last August) I held off, in case the college had a preference for a homework platform -- but so far it seems they don't, so she's still reading paper books.
My son is also a big reader, but he has no interest in ereaders, so there's just my JetBook and my wife's Ipad. |

My son was 35 when he got his first e-reader. My grand-daughter was 6 when she got hers.

The girls starting using eReaders at 8. They're 10 now and just got the new Kobo Mini (which is a 5" touch screen ereader) and love it. The size is great for their smaller hands and they love earning awards through Kobo's Reading Life feature.

Two of my grandsons own Kindle Fires. They are both 3, with one turning 4 in a couple of weeks.
The one turning 4 can read just about anything put in front of him. The younger one is just starting to sound things out and looks at books that are read out loud on his KF. Both boys play games on them also. Both have owned their KF since shortly after release and neither has any kind of damage. Kindle Fires are built very sturdy. Not sure I would want them to have access to my eInk devices. |
