This is total bullshit - a beat-up. I have already moved two licences from three year old notebooks to new i7 laptops. All it took was a call to Microsoft support and they quickly and politely issued new keys.

In this country (Australia) what is suggested would be in breach of the Australian Trade Practice Act. It would bring massive fines to Microsoft. Here, if you buy something - you own it and can do what you like with it. It has to be, and remain, "Fit for the purpose for which it was purchased".

It actually was correct, but since this thread started and since that article came out MS changed their license. Whether it would have held water in Australia I can not say, but it was perfectly legal here in US. Either way, this is an old thread and MS already reversed positions on it.

Yes sure. As I did this before the dates mentioned and as Microsoft themselves have never made this claim I still say beat-up.

When asked whether a license could be transferred to another machine if the original rig was destroyed, lost or stolen, Microsoft replied with a frosty, "No comment."

Microsoft has never refused to transfer the licence - regardless of the number of "blogs" claiming that they will, might, or would. If you want to know about Microsoft policy look to Microsoft, not people blogging about Microsoft, or magazines who source their "data" from such bloggers.

Microsoft has now confirmed to Computerworld that the software's license can't be reassigned to another PC, as is possible with Office 2010

Sorry, I can not speak for your country, or your laws or how ppl act where you are. But this is not unheard of here in America, and MS has tried this before and failed.

The "no comment" came AFTER the stuff hit ye old fan and they began to back off. Under pressure they backed down and changed the terms of their license which confirms there was an issue.

I am not sure why you want to jump in and defend a MS that already admitted it was wrong and already changed its terms to a better course? Everyone else has moved on and been okay with how it turned out.

Either way, this is a dead issue. MS goofed up , and then fixed it.

So lets let this thread go back to being dead and move on with them? Cool?
