DeDRM Software
DRM Removal software hits the big time... it's just been featured on the front page of BoingBoing in a short posting from Cory Doctorow.
(And, incidentally, the DeDRM software for Mac users has been updated once more. It's now hit 2.0, but seems much the same to me, with just a little more refinement.) |

I wonder if all this visibility may cause his page to be removed?

Good advice regardless. I grabbed the latest version when it was available even though I haven't updated yet. Ya never know when it might have to go dark, at least for a little while.

If that happens, I'm sure he'll have it up elsewhere in short order. There's no shortage of friendly hosting options - wordpress just happens to be convenient and free.

Although, if removing DRM isn't illegal where it's hosted then it shouldn't be a problem.
It's not like he is advocating stealing the books. |

Someone enterprising could mirror their sites - and torrent them, too.

I am curious what percentage of folks who use deDRM software just use it for reasons like they are against what DRM stands for or they want to only use the books on their personal e-readers that use different formatting rather than pirating or torrent sites.

I use it so I can fix spelling mistakes and change the formatting if it is too awful.

I've never used it. drm doesn't bother me in principle, and I only read ebooks on the one device so as far as I'm concerned it may as well not exist. I almost wish I had a good reason to.

I remove DRM from all the Kindle books I purchase from Amazon. I don't distribute them afterwards or anything. But with the stories of Amazon removing books from devices (whether deliberately or not), I feel more comfortable removing the DRM. That way I know it won't be an issue. Plus if I ever replace it with a Nook, or a Sony reader, or anything else, I know I won't lose my books.
