Shadow's Rise: Chronicles of the Fists Trilogy Book 1 - Sword & Sorcery meets Shaolin

Shadow's Rise: Return of the Cabal - The Chronicles of the Fists: Book 1

Yip Chi Chuan, a young martial and spiritual ascetic, must flee as the only home he has ever known, the ancient monastery of the Priests of K'un Lun, is destroyed by a newly ascendant extradimensional evil. Cast out and alone, Yip strikes out on a quest spanning the breadth of his home world of Ea'ae and into the greater macroverse beyond in an attempt to unseat an all-consuming Darkness rooted in his once vaunted order's distant past.

Will Yip, the last of his kind to walk the wide world beyond his fallen sanctuary, succeed where his mighty brethren failed in ages past?

Unfortunately for Yip, the answer appears all too clear... Without the guidance and teachings of his lineage, pursued by malevolent supernatural agents of the Cabal, unable to fully defend himself in a world steeped in magic, his quest may fail before it ever begins.

Unfazed by his limitations, guided by his inner vision and direct experience of the energies of life, the radiant chi suffusing and enlivening the world all around, he is determined to triumph where others have faltered.

To win forward, he will need help...but first he must survive.

A blend of Western fantasy and Eastern martial arts and mysticism, Shadow's Rise is the first book of the Chronicles of the Fists, an epic trilogy recounting Yip's adventures against all odds.

Shadow's Rise is an epic fantasy novel of 190,000 words.

Is there a sample available?

In many respects, this sounds like Way-Farer by Dennis Schmidt, and that book is one of my all time favorites, so this seems like it would be right up my alley.

Thanks for sharing the link, Don! I wasn't sure if posting the pdf excerpt directly would be appropriate.

Ravensknight, I have not read Way-Farers but it does appear to be an interesting read. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!

I think the Chronicles of the Fists trilogy would be to your liking. In lieu of a sci-fi setting, imagine a more traditional fantasy world with dragons, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, and Gnomes alongside many other races I created, each with their own cultures and magical interpretations and traditions. Add to that, Yip, a martial and spiritual seeker trying to find his way in a world imperiled and many of the elements of Way-Farers appear to be there.

Without getting too esoteric (and starting a tangent on the development of various schools of East Asian spiritual traditions), the influences are more Chinese than Japanese. So, there is a fantasized mixture of Buddhist (particularly Chán, Zen's Chinese precursor) and Daoist practice in the protagonist's training (along with flashbacks to sessions with his master akin to those in the Kung Fu television series). For those interested in learning a bit more, I have included a glossary explaining some Buddhist and Taoist ideas that may be unfamiliar along with many things I simply made up to add depth and broaden the world.

Thank you for your interest! Let me know if you have any more questions.

If you do check it out, you'll have to let me know what you think!
