Well, one thing we've established is that there are a lot of old buggers in mobileread.com!

I came across an interesting article on the history of spaces after periods, did I miss this linked somewhere else?

BTW, GA Russell, if you learned to type in 1966 and your avatar is a picture of you, I'd like to know what anti-wrinkle cream you use.

In answer to the op, I learned double after a sentence even though I grew up with computers and even learned to type on one. I never felt like changing my habit, nor did I ever feel pressure to in academia even though I wrote a lot across a wide range of disciplines and had some pretty detail oriented profs. Not sure if I just wasn't paying attention when I learned, but I never did put two spaces after a colon.
The first time I confronted the single space dogma, it had the kind of fervor from the xkcd strip attached below. In real life, I've never heard anyone who uses double spaces try and demand it of someone else. Quote:

Better not overusing them.
Space is an unforgiving bitch they say. |

2 spaces for me, and i learned on a computer. My laptop kbd is a piece of crap & the space bar is kind of unresponsive. I write with a markup language rather than a Whatyaseeizwhatyamightget word processor, so it's not such a huge deal.
