I got one of the wifi/3g refurbs off ebay delivered yesterday. The firmware is 1.4.3 and the serial # starts with 100085. Very clean condition.

This is really odd since the 1.4.3 would be less than a month old; assuming that the serials are sequential, the 100085 would be pretty old as I got a 100200 last summer.

Well, if they go to the trouble to refurbish an older device, wouldn't they update the firmware while they're at it?

Of course, that is not what is odd. What is odd is that they had these around for this long, then, supposedly got a batch with bad cases, and now have enough to be selling what looks like close to 5000 "refurbished" Nooks. Also, the 1.4.3 version is a totally different piece of hardware with no internal SD socket but a chip hardwired in, at least according to nookdev. What the conventional wisdom said was that the hardware change came around serial 10031 or so.

What is even odder is that I got one today with a serial number nearly the same which had 1.4.0 firmware which has the older chip socket. My unit makes sense. The one above should have had 1.4.0 unless 1.4.3 is something really weird or unless he somehow got a hardware change many, many months early.

I am happy, in my case, because the old hardware I received is softrootable and looks new.

I just checked eBay, and they have refurbished NOOK Wi-Fi eReaders on offer for $79.00 (and also $99).

Dang!! I just ordered the $99 one two days ago, and it shipped yesterday (of course it won't be here until Monday at least)..

I think it's weird that they are selling them at both $79 & $99... shouldn't it be one or the other on the same day?

They did the same thing when they dropped the price last time with a $50 difference, so this is business as usual. Now we will have to see if anymore show up.
