Three books in the "Eoin Miller" crime series by Jay Stringer are included in today's Amazon UK Kindle Daily Deal at 99p each:

Old Gold
Runaway Town
Lost City

Not an author I'm familiar with, but the descriptions (ex-detective turned criminal) sound interesting, so worth a punt at the price.

All published by Thomas and Mercer.

This repeat freebie is on offer again today: Cold Fear (Tom Reed and Walt Sydowski #2) by Rick Mofina. First published by Pinnacle in 2002.

Quote:
In the remote, rugged corner of Montana’s Glacier National Park known as the Devil’s Grasp, little Paige Baker of San Francisco disappears with her dog, Kobee, while on a camping trip with her family; or so her mother and father have told authorities.

A multi-agency task force launches a massive search as Paige fights to survive in the wilderness. Time hammers against her and soon the nation is gripped by the life-and-death drama.

Secretly, behind the scenes, the FBI grows suspicious of Paige’s parents. Their recent history and disturbing evidence links them to a horrible secret from the past.

For Scandinavian crime fiction fans: I just received a rare Camilla Läckberg price drop notice from ereaderiq.com.

The Hidden Child (Fjällbacka #5) by Camilla Läckberg temporarily dropped to $2.99 at Amazon. It is still $16.37 at Kobo and $12.99 at B&N.

Quote:
The brilliant new psychological thriller from worldwide bestseller Camilla Läckberg—the chilling struggle of a young woman facing the darkest chapter of Europe’s past.

Crime writer Erica Falck is shocked to discover a Nazi medal among her late mother’s possessions. Haunted by a childhood of neglect, she resolves to dig deep into her family’s past and finally uncover the reasons why. Her enquiries lead her to the home of a retired history teacher. He was among her mother’s circle of friends during the Second World War but her questions are met with bizarre and evasive answers. Two days later he meets a violent death. Detective patrik Hedström, Erica’s husband, is on paternity leave but soon becomes embroiled in the murder investigation. Who would kill so ruthlessly to bury secrets so old? Reluctantly Erica must read her mother’s wartime diaries. But within the pages is a painful revelation about Erica’s past. Could what little knowledge she has be enough to endanger her husband and newborn baby? The dark past is coming to light, and no one will escape the truth of how they came to be . . .

The Savage Day by Jack Higgins is this weeks free book of the week from Apple in the US. I've reported to Amazon so hopefully they'll price match (& if they do Google might too).

https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/the...78663686?mt=11

Quote:
Simon Vaughan’s life of adventure and arms trafficking came to an abrupt end the day the police threw him into a jail cell in Greece. But then the British Army comes calling with an offer he can’t refuse. In exchange for his freedom, Vaughan must recover a bounty of gold stolen by the IRA in Belfast, and extinguish the organization’s ruthless leader in the process.

Now Vaughan must brave a new kind of war zone, one where he’ll fight to hang on to his freedom, and his life.

The books in Koji Suzuki's Ring Trilogy are £0.99 each at UK retailers: Ring, Loop, Spiral.

If you've seen the awful Hollywood movie adaption of Ring, don't let that put you off, the book is much better.

Edit: His short story collection Dark Water is also £0.99.

Last edited by GeoffR; 07-02-2014 at 03:11 AM. Reason: Dark Water also on special

Just got notice of a temporary price drop to $1.99 for an exceptional mystery writer and series:

Chasing Darkness (Elvis Cole #11) by Robert Crais.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000YJ675E

Quote:
It’s fire season, and the hills of Los Angeles are burning. When police and fire department personnel rush door to door in a frenzied evacuation effort, they discover the week-old corpse of an apparent suicide. But the gunshot victim is less gruesome than what they find in his lap: a photo album of seven brutally murdered young women—one per year, for seven years. And when the suicide victim is identified as a former suspect in one of the murders, the news turns Elvis Cole’s world upside down.

Three years earlier Lionel Byrd was brought to trial for the murder of a female prostitute named Yvonne Bennett. A taped confession coerced by the police inspired a prominent defense attorney to take Byrd’s case, and Elvis Cole was hired to investigate. It was Cole’s eleventh-hour discovery of an exculpatory videotape that allowed Lionel Byrd to walk free. Elvis was hailed as a hero.

But the discovery of the death album in Byrd’s lap now brands Elvis as an unwitting accomplice to murder. Captured in photographs that could only have been taken by the murderer, Yvonne Bennett was the fifth of the seven victims—two more young women were murdered after Lionel Byrd walked free. So Elvis can’t help but wonder—did he, Elvis Cole, cost two more young women their lives?

Shut out of the investigation by a special LAPD task force determined to close the case, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike desperately fight to uncover the truth about Lionel Byrd and his nightmare album of death—a truth hidden by lies, politics, and corruption in a world where nothing is what it seems to be.
I enthusiastically recommend giving Robert Crais a chance if you haven't read him yet. Here's a Goodreads link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/..._Darkness?ac=1

I like the Joe Pike series better than Elvis Cole, but they are all good, action-packed mysteries. Also: Joe Pike is one cool dude.

Bold emphasis above is mine. I'm with you there. The great news is that Joe Pike is in Chasing Darkness. Crais describes Pike as a 'walking can of whup ass' and says that the emails from women (and not a few men) that come addressed to his fictional character are 'feral'.

Quote:
They say, “I WANT Joe Pike.”
Which means, because it’s oh so easy to infer their dripping fangs and pheromone fog even through the filter of internet fan mail, “I’d suck the marrow from his bones.” -- Robert Crais

Yea, I get that.

A couple of Simon & Schuster price drops (US & Canada)...

Quote:
It's going to be a tough trial. Manhattan sex-crimes prosecutor Alexandra Cooper's case, involving an attack on investment banker Paige Vallis, would be difficult to prove even without the latest development -- it seems that Paige has something to hide.

Most of her story is clear. She'd had dinner with New York consultant Andrew Tripping three times before the March evening when she accepted his invitation to accompany him to his apartment. But what occurred that night? Why didn't she leave the apartment when he started to act strangely? What about Tripping's little boy, Dulles? What happened to the child that fateful evening? And who is the strange man whose appearance in the courtroom seems to terrify Paige?

While Alex's police detective friend Mercer Wallace helps her learn more of the sad details behind the increasingly puzzling rape case, colleague Mike Chapman is uptown in a decaying Harlem brownstone where eighty-two-year-old McQueen Ransome has been murdered, her apartment ransacked.

What could this impoverished, elderly woman have possessed that could have inspired such violence? Photographs on the wall suggest that "Queenie" was once a beautiful and voluptuous young woman who traveled to faraway places. Could there be a clue to her murder in her exotic background?
Her murder will be only the first. Others follow, as the tragic strands of the Paige Vallis and McQueen Ransome cases begin to converge in a poignant alliance of two women from very different worlds.

Faced with formidable personal and professional choices, Alex must learn the old lesson that appearances can deceive, even as she heads for a showdown in which her wits and her courage will be tested as never before.

With its winning combination of courtroom drama, historical detail, and the intriguing lore of a rare object whose fabled provenance provides a glistening thread through the story, The Kills is powerful, stylish writing from a hugely appealing crime-writing star.

Web of Evil by J.A. Jance - $1.99
Amazon US | Amazon CA | Kobo | Google | eBooks.com | B&N | OmniLit
Note: The price hasn't dropped yet at B&N or OmniLit yet, but links are included as it should drop soon.
Quote:
The highway from Los Angeles to the Palm Springs desert is parched, unforgiving, and deadly. In the suffocating stillness of a car trunk, a man -- his mouth and hands bound with tape -- waits to learn his fate. Fortunately for him, he'll never know. What possible enemy could be bitter enough to commit such a heinous crime? And when will the monster make another move?

Ali Reynolds is traveling that same blistering, lonesome highway, looking forward to putting her past behind her. She'd left Los Angeles for the home comforts of Sedona, Arizona, and the satisfaction of a blog. But her cheating husband is in a hurry for a divorce; his very young and very pregnant fiancée has a wedding planned for the next day. And the television network that wrongfully dismissed Ali for the sole sin of being over forty will face her in court as well. So Ali must return to the scene of those crimes. As she passes the site of a horrifying accident, she thanks goodness it's no longer her job to report the news. Until she finds out the news is her own.... For the victim is Ali's cheating husband, and soon she'll find herself the prime suspect at the center of a terrifying web of evil.

Web of Evil gives us J. A. Jance at her most masterful in a twisted and lethal drama of heart-pounding suspense that asks the question: If hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, just what punishment could that fury unleash?

"Feral? That whole comment is pretty funny! Crais is a riot. Kind of a subtle over-the-top sense of humor.

Free today from Deadly Niche Press (DRM free):

Beneath a Buried House (Detective Elliot #2) by Bob Avey.

Quote:
Things aren’t always what they seem. Tulsa Police Detective, Kenny Elliot’s quest to uncover the truth behind the death of a transient makes him a target – from whom or what he isn’t sure. When he brushes the dirt from the surface of an apparent John Doe overdose case, he finds a labyrinth of misdirection and deception beneath, and a trail, which leads him to an encounter with an aberration in human nature, the likes of which he’s not prepared to deal with.

Drawing on his strength of character, and sense of right and wrong, he wrestles with deep personal feelings to solve the case.
