Free at Amazon today: The Doomsday Bag (Ed Noon Mystery #20) by Michael Avallone. First published by Signet, 1969.

Quote:
The President’s “Shadow” is missing, and with him the lethal Doomsday Bag—the black satchel that contains the thermonuclear codes for total world destruction. When that black bag disappears, the President hands detective Ed Noon the grimmest assignment of his career: find the Bagman, and fast. If Noon fails, there will be no world left to know about it.

The Adventures of Ed Noon, Private Eye, spanning over 30 novels written between 1953 and 1990. Noon starts out dirt poor with a tiny office in Midtown Manhattan (his “Mouse Auditorium”) but success moves him to better digs, a lovely secretary (Melissa Mercer) and, eventually, the most important client of all: the President of the United States. The series concludes with a daring turn towards science fiction in the last two novels. Through it all, the wisecracking Noon is consistent: a movie and baseball-obsessed romantic who always fights the good fight. And, more often than not, wins.

Cross posting from the Kobo bargain thread:

Kobo has several
Aimee and David Thurlo books (mystery, southwest) on sale--kind of like Tony Hillerman only I liked these better. I'm not sure if they are matching an Amazon sale or the other way around. I blogged about couple. Blackening Song is the first in this series.

For cozy readers, there are some Donna Andrews (humorous mysteries) on sale. There's a bundle on the first two books in the series.

I don't know if Kobo coupons work with these (These are series I've read for the most part) but at these prices, they are bargains anyway!!!

The Intercept by Dick Wolf is FREE at Amazon US. Published in 2012 by HarperCollins.

Quote:
Dick Wolf, the celebrated creator of the Law & Order television franchise, makes his literary debut with The Intercept, a taut, driving thriller reminiscent of the classic The Day of the Jackal.

Days before the July Fourth holiday and the dedication of One World Trade Center at Ground Zero, an incident aboard a commercial jet reminds everyone involved that vigilance saves lives.

But New York Police detective Jeremy Fisk—from the department’s Intelligence Division, a well-funded anti-terror unit modeled upon the CIA—suspects that the event is a warning sign that another, potentially more extraordinary scheme has been set in motion. So when a passenger from the same plane disappears into the crowds of Manhattan, it’s up to Fisk and his partner Krina Gersten to find him before the celebrations begin... And time is running out.

Each of the chess players comes under scrutiny and it isn’t long before another murder is committed.
As the plot thickens will the answer slip through Hasdai’s fingers?

Free Today on Amazon UK - The Visitor by Scott Griffin

'Rebecca Hooper has been visiting her mother on the dementia ward for 18 months.
She only has one other relative who she knows about - a reclusive brother - so she is shocked when she finds out someone else has been visiting as well.
When she takes an early trip to the ward, she sees an elderly gentleman walking away from her mother’s bedside.
He pretends not to hear her when she calls out to him, and she loses sight of him in the crowd.
Who is the Visitor?
When Rebecca finally corners him he seems more than happy to talk to her.
He says his name is Patrick Yates, and he claims he has been lonely since his wife died and so he comes to the hospital to visit some of the elderly patients.
But after talking with him Rebecca is suspicious.
He seems to know a lot about her family. And enjoys watching her discomfort when he brings up personal stories.
Is he really who he says he is?
Are his visits innocent?
Or are his motives more sinister? '

He has been brutally bludgeoned to death, and there are no witnesses.
When DCI Webb is called to the case, he has a nasty sense that he’s been here before.
Six years previously, Trevor Philpott’s body was found in identical circumstances.
But the case was never closed, and the killer is still at large.
As Webb delves back into the details of the previous case he uncovers more unsolved mysteries.
Are the cases connected?
Has the same killer been responsible for more murders over the years?
DCI Webb must return to the past, if he has any hope of stopping more killings in the future… '

Pursuit And Persuasion (Ben Reese mystery series #3) by Sally Wright, published in print by Fawcett in 2000, is free today at Amazon.

Quote:
Pursuit And Persuasion, (a 2001 Mystery Writers Of America Edgar Allan Poe Award Finalist) revolves around the secrets unearthed by Georgina Fletcher - a private, self-contained, contemplative Scotswoman, a widow, and an English professor at Aberdeen University. The day before she dies, she writes an alarming letter to her heir (the American daughter of her oldest friend) and arranges to have it posted in the event of her death.

"...I have reason to believe that my death was desired, planned and perpetrated with great care and deliberation. Even if I am right, the circumstances of my death will appear to have been brought about by natural causes..."

Georgina is anything but a fool, and it happens just as she'd feared. She's also punctilious and ethical, and won't name the person she suspects. Her assumptions are based on speculation, and she refuses to risk condemning any innocent person. She asks instead that her heir, Ellen Winter, hire a detective to investigate her death, free of her own prejudices.
Ellen is one of Ben Reese's archival apprentices at Alderton University, so she knows he's an ex-World War II Scout who's solved other murder cases and is in Scotland on sabbatical. She'd much rather ask Ben to help than use some unknown detective.

Repeat freebie on offer again today: Invisible Armies by Jon Evans, published in print by HarperCollins, 2006.

Quote:
Danielle Leaf thought she was performing an innocent errand. Then she was kidnapped and imprisoned, victim of the ongoing war between anticorporate activists and the Kishkinda titanium mine that poisons thousands of poverty-stricken farmers in rural India. Her daring escape is only the beginning; now she has been drawn into this war, where both sides are willing to kill for their cause - and both sides hide terrible secrets.

Free Today on Amazon UK -Into the Abyss (Dark Prospects) by Xu Lei

'In 1962, as post-war China's first generation of geological prospectors, we were ordered to travel to the forests of Inner Mongolia to carry out a mission of national secrecy. Our task: to find a Japanese warplane buried over half a mile underground. Together with Wang Sichuan, Old Cat and the rest of the team, I descended beneath the earth. There we discovered a sprawling Japanese base from the 1940s, perched on the edge of an endless abyss. As we soon realized, the Japanese had flown a heavy-duty bomber into the void. What were they looking for? To find out, we retrieved the film recording they had taken of the flight.

We believed that after watching this terrifying film, we could return to the surface and resume our normal lives. But our superiors had other plans. They ordered us to undertake a new mission. This time the task was suicidal. We were to fly a plane into the abyss, using the same methods as the Japanese. After writing a final letter to our families, we climbed aboard that fatal flight. For me, however, things were different. and I were soon to part, and I knew that somehow this mission might give me the chance to change our fates. Still I had no idea: what kind of ending awaited me in the darkness ahead? My sweetheart Yuan Xile had previously shown me a strange sentence, "Inevitability Begets Inevitability," carved onto the wall of a flooded room.'

There's a big buy two get third free over at B&N. I don't know what to search on and I only have an associate coded link. When I took my associate code out, the link didn't work because it's meant for blogging, not as a simple link. I believe they are all Hachette books to take advantage of the negotiations going on between Hachette and Amazon. James Patterson was definitely on the list of qualified purchases--these are also PRINT books only from what I can tell.
