Lending books

Quite a few people have expressed concerns regarding the giving away of ebooks.

So, I'm wondering how many of your paper books have you ever lent out or given away?

I'm in the '1% or less' category.

I've given away the vast majority of pbooks I've ever owned. Most books, I read them once and that's it, so most of the books I DO have on my shelves are ones waiting to be read. The rest are reference books that I haven't gotten e-versions for yet.

Lending and giving away are two entirely different cases.

I'm happy to give books away, but I try never to lend them.

If I'm likely to read a book again, I won't lend it; I'll keep it for myself. If I'm not likely to read it again, anyone who wants it is welcome to have it.

I never, ever, lend my paper books. I've found that other people don't treat them with the care and respect that I give to my own books. I've only lend people books twice; on both occasions they've come back to me in a shocking state. Never again!

I'm in the 1% category.

I do occasionally lend books and give them away. But I buy books to keep, so if I lend them, they go to people I know will care for them and return them in the condition in which they got them. And books I give away are all titles where I've managed to accumulate a duplicate copy, and I want the dupe to go to a good home that will enjoy reading it.

I guess I'm in 1% too, but only because I have many books and few friends (and even fewer who could be interested in reading my books, and not have them already)

That 10% category I chose should be going up very soon, as I am readying myself to liquidate almost all of my print books, although many I will be trying to sell, so I don't know if that counts.

Looking back again at previous posts, I would have to say that I don't usually lend, but rather give them away. I remember lending out a book once and being completely appalled at the condition it was returned to me in! There were so many written notes in it, pertaining nothing to the book, but rather like it was being used as a scratch pad! Not to mention how mangled and bent up it was when returned.

I can't imagine treating anyone else's property like that. If something happened to something I'd borrowed, I would certainly replace it! On other rare occasions where I've lent books out, I've rarely gotten them back. Some I've even asked for their return to no avail (I'm sure that there's nothing malicious behind this, just very unorganized or absent-minded people.) My husband has had some bad experiences with borrowing out his tools (as much of value to him as books are to me), so neither of us lend out anything with the expectation of getting them back (in any condition), sad to say.

Rarely do I lend books.

Even more rarely do I borrow them.

If I'm that interested in one, I'll buy it myself.

What Harry says is the way I feel also!

Percentage is pretty uninteresting. I lend a lot of books to friends but I also own a lot of books and a lot of bad books so the percentage will not be so high.

I don't lend books, same reason as Harry.

I have been giving books I don't want away to charity and that is likely to increase as I move to a purely eBook fiction library.

I have a friend that does that. I wonder if she used to be a librarian?

Before I got my eReader, I had quite a collection of paperbacks. I donated most of them to charity shops, and gave lots more to friends. I kept a few favourites to read again. If I can't get an ebook I will buy the paperback particularly if it's by one of my favourite authors. I don't have the patience to wait until it comes out in ebook format. I still have a little stack of paperbacks I haven't gotten around to reading yet. Sorry, to answer your question....No I don't lend books.

Mag.

The Ladies Guild of my church has a rummage sale from time to time, and I donate my books to it. Very little money is raised from the books, but I know that they are going to people who are interested.
