Actually, it does, since (if it still works like on older device), AFAIK, it works by cutting the power from the battery for a very short while, which doesn't seem to have the desired effect if the Kindle is connected to a power supply .

TL;DR:

Yep, unplug it before attempting a hard reboot.

No. MfgTool doesn't work on the PW, because there is no possibility to boot the Paperwhite into USB downloader mode. That's what I meant with "locked down and not debrickable".

Your only option is opening the device, soldering, and debricking it using a serial cable. See knc1's link.

Or - exchanging it.

@knc1: You can simply replace the "showpost.php" by "showthread.php" in the link, and it will take you to the post, while showing the thread, too. (i.e., it jumps to "the post in context", for lack of a better description)

Thanks for the tip. "Post in Context" sounds like what was needed.
Could have used in several other places also.
