How do I fix my epub file to upload on lulu?
Hello
I am having problems, just like some others I have seen on here, with uploading my epub file to lulu. My process has been - word pdf - convert in Calibre - edit, add pics and toc in Sigil and verified on threepress. Then I've gone back a few times into Sigil to correct my mistakes as indicated by threepress. Today, threepress say my file is acceptable - there are no errors - horrah! BUT: lulu are still not accepting the file due to 'permission errors'. Any pointers for what I can do now? Really want to get my ebook up and start promoting it! Many 's |

I have some clearer information, sent back from the guy at lulu - great - now I can be more specific.
Here are the basic errors: ERROR: Unmanifested file: META-INF/calibre_bookmarks.txt ERROR: assertion failed: different playOrder values for navPoint/navTarget/pageTarget that refer to same target in OEBPS/toc.ncx on line 33 ERROR: could not parse OEBPS/Text/Section0002.xhtml: duplicate id: heading_id_5 ERROR: 'heading_id_6': fragment identifier is not defined in 'OEBPS/Text/Section0002.xhtml' in OEBPS/toc.ncx on line 55 ERROR: Invalid file permissions: mimetype ERROR: Invalid file permissions: META-INF/container.xml ERROR: Invalid file permissions: OEBPS/content.opf ERROR: Invalid file permissions: OEBPS/toc.ncx ERROR: Invalid file permissions: META-INF/calibre_bookmarks.txt Its helpful being told what line the error is on and I presume the heading are to do with the TOC, but aside from that I cannot understand each error and moreover, how to fix them. Is there some kind of document or manual online that outlines each error and how to fix? That would be great. Help VERY much appreciated. |

The first one is caused by Calibre-viewer marking where yo read. (it probably will appear under Misc in Sigil) #2 did you hand edit/remove files from the EPUB outside of Sigil? #3 there is a second (or more) line with the same id=... #4 The rest (permissions) not sure were they read only. In Calibre: T (tweak epub: examine the properties of each. Fix as needed, then 'Rebuild' |

Your process seems.... cumbersome.
You are using this path: Word --> PDF --> Calibre --> Sigil --> Treepress You can better do the following: Word --> filtered HTML --> Sigil (with Flightcrew) --> Treepress (if you must...) That will yield better results, since no conversion from PDF has to be made. That will always results in less than perfect conversions. If you use styles in Word, that will make your life a lot easier. You can remove a whole lot of crap from the filtered HTML, but it will result in a better file. If you insist on use Calibre, you can better use the following path: Word --> RTF --> Calibre --> Sigil. That should yield to better results. |

Actually, stay the heck away from Word. Even filtered HTML can be full of garbage. You will be spending a good amount of time cleaning up the mess Word puts in.
That said, never ever use PDF as a source format. You cannot convert it without errors. |

OK, I'm still getting a load of errors - this time all to do with my images. I think I should have mentioned this before - My EBook contains a lot of images. The first attempt I had inserted all the images in at sigil stage. For this attempt the images were in put in in word and the document saved as htm. (I couldn't save as filtered html as this wasn't an option or am I missing something?)
These are my errors now: attribute '{urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml}shapes' is not declared for element 'img' attribute 'border' is not declared for element 'img' for every image I have in there. I still feel a million miles away from getting this sorted. Please tell me I am wrong and that these errors are easily rectified! Thanks guys. |

There should be a filtered HTML and you definitely want it. Word is not the best for saving HTML, but filtered HTML helps to keep the garbage level to acceptable.
You need to clean the code from Word, there is no way around that unfortunately. It seems that some of the Word garbage is messing with you here. There are references to attributes which are not in the internal or external CSS file. If they are not required, remove them for all images. Normally that can be done with a replace all command rather quickly. |

PDF I really dislike. With PDFReflow the results are usually acceptable, but even then rework is required. |

But as far as cleaning things up, I find that if you convert the HTML from Word into ePub, then it will be easier to clean it up to be decent code. |

I'm using Word 2008 - I can't save as filtered HTML, (as much as I'd like to not have to use Calibre and jump straight into Sigil) - so I've saved as HTM, converted in Calibre and now editing in Sigil.
I don't know which attributes to remove from the images to be honest, as I dont know enough about it. I have 2 issues: 1- Image errors: attribute '{urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml}shapes' is not declared for element 'img' attribute 'border' is not declared for element 'img' The code looks like this for each image: <p class="MsoNormal"><span class="calibre15" xml:lang="EN-US" xmlns:xml="http://www.w3.org/XML/1998/namespace"><!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shape id="Picture_x0020_1" o:spid="_x0000_i1053" type="#_x0000_t75" alt=":jpgs -full:makeyourownwallart.jpg" style='width:300pt;height:228pt;visibility:visible ;mso-wrap-style:square'> <v:imagedata src="50_Art_and_Crafts_Projects_files/image003.jpg" o:title="makeyourownwallart.jpg"/> <v:textbox style='mso-rotate-with-shape:t'/> </v:shape><![endif]--><img alt=":jpgs -full:makeyourownwallart.jpg" border="0" class="calibre16" src="../Images/image004.jpg" v:shapes="Picture_x0020_1" /></span></p> Which bits should I edit out to prevent the errors? 2- Misc error: OEBPS/Text/50_Art_and_Crafts_Projects_files/editdata.mso This resource is reachable but not present in the OPF <manifest>. "Reachable" means that a reference of some kind that points to this resource exists in the epub. Thanks for your time guys. |

Replace:
Code:
<img alt=":jpgs -full:makeyourownwallart.jpg" border="0" class="calibre16" src="../Images/image004.jpg" v:shapes="Picture_x0020_1" /> Code:
<img alt=":jpgs -full:makeyourownwallart.jpg" class="calibre16" src="../Images/image004.jpg" /> |

Jellby, you are a star, thank you very much. I have now successfully edited out the border and shapes attributes.
Regarding the second error, I have located the code but when deleting it, a whole host of new errors come up pointing to my images. So the error reads: OEBPS/Text/50_Art_and_Crafts_Projects_files/editdata.mso This resource is reachable but not present in the OPF <manifest>. And the code is right up the top in line 13: <link href="../Text/filelist.xml" rel="File-List" /> <link href="50_Art_and_Crafts_Projects_files/editdata.mso" rel="Edit-Time-Data" /><!--[if !mso]> I have tried a few things but really I'm just stabbing in the dark. Any thoughts? |

Is the <!--[if !mso]> right? As is, it's interpreted as a comment start (<!--), and the comment end (-->) should be further down, in that case don't delete the start.
If it's <!--[if !mso]--> instead, that's a full comment, and can be safely deleted. |
