It seems to me that more high speed trains would be nice, unfortunately the oilpump people don't like em.

You have no idea... trains require infrastructure as well and you can't exactly stick a high speed line to every front doorstep... try looking at a map of the world sometime, a lot of the world has a relatively light occupation of areas which require individual transport... or perhaps you'd prefer to rollback to a peasant based economy with people tied to walking distance from where they live... hey, we can have the old Golden Age... where lives were hard, short and impoverished, as long as you don't have to live like that...

IMO, walking a few miles every day to get to your train is fine. If you can't walk then you can call the shuttle bus to come get you.

Until recently, I lived 45 miles from work, the nearest train was 60 miles away. The nearest bus stop was right around the corner from work. US doesn't have the infrastructure that Europe has, and due to its size and distributed population, likely never will have. Europe's population centers were established when everyone had to stay in walking distance to things, where as with the US, that wasn't the case. Outside of major cities like Chicago and New York, public transport isn't an option for most of the population.

Whenever plans for high speed rail are shelved I get a little angry on the inside, especially when the opposition to the plans are those with a vested interest in personal transport fuel.

They are working on a highspeed rail system in my area for St Louis to Chicago, but that doesn't solve most of the problems.

Highspeed is great between major cities. The problem the US has is that most people need ways to travel within the cities. Some US city metropolitan regions are larger than some european countries. I live in the St Louis metro, which isn't really all that big compared to other cities, yet we have 8,458 sq mi (21,906.1 km^2) of area, with 2.7 million people. With how things grew up, most people aren't able to work within walking, or biking distance of their homes. It isn't uncommon for people to be a half hour or hour away by car.

Train designs are copyright too, and they get out of sight a lot faster than books.

We can begin to talk of rights, the rights of trees and birds to exist, and not have their world destroyed by the encroachment of humanity and their technology.

At the moment I'm thinking about the backend of a book distribution site in a copyright free world, if you have any thoughts about this please let me know.
