Opening an Epub file fails
Hey,
I downloaded couple of books from the Internet Archive (archive.org) and moved them to the device using Calibre but every time I open the book the reader returns to the home screen. I've not seen this behavior before... I downloaded a book from gutenberg.org and it worked _perfectly_ also the books I already have on the device work without a problem. Any Ideas? Thanks, Yoni |

I wouldn't put too much effort into trying to open epubs from the Internet Archive. Those are completely raw, unproofed OCRs of Google scans - basically unreadable. Open one on your computer and you will see what I mean...

Agree with doubleshuffle. I'd suspect a badly formatted epub file, especially since only the one book is doing it. I've also seen some horrendous public domain epubs that really are pretty much unreadable. You might be able to open it in Sigil and fix the problems, but depending on the OCR scan, it might not be worth it. Try to open it on your computer and see what shape the epub is in.

Not all files at archive.org are google scans. In fact I am not even sure any of the google scans landed there.
Mostly these are files uploaded by individuals (I suspect to be internal competitions who scans more books), that fed a page scanner with a book and let it do automatically the job of scanning and OCRing it. And automatic means bad. I had very bad experiences with archive and books. It's better to get the PDF (there will always be an PDF there) rather than the ePub. Nevertheless, I would check the epub in calibre to see what's happening. |

Run the books in question through calibre conversion ... it would appear they are corrupt it may or may not fix them but it's worth a try... I run all my epubs through calibre conversion before loding them on my reader.. if that doesn't work then try downloading them again I assume these are non-drm files ?

Hi,
I gave up and download the book from gutenberg. BUT I was able to read the book on Calibre, and after I added a cover image (Using Calibre) and added it back to the PRS-T1 , the reader showed the image and returned back immediately to the home page... |

And what you could read in Calibre wasn't riddled with errors? That's interesting. Could you post a link to the book on the Internet Archive?

That is not the book I downloaded (I respect IP) but just for future generations I tried it also with the following link and it shows the same behavior:

I thought you were referring to a PD book (which you probably were since you could get it from Project Gutenberg). Anyway, I'm not going to download the one you linked to, and you should remove the link asap. Check the forum rules on piracy. |

They do, unfortunately.
This would render archive.org guilty of IP infringements and yet another good thing will disappear. Like they won't have enough torrents and specialised fora. Stupid people. The worst is that they don't even do a quality job. In this particular case, I've found the typical problem - the first page is scanned and placed as an image, the rest is OCRed (in good quality since it's English and all OCR software are optimised for English). However the images are missing - and this is maybe why the PRS-T1 fails (loads and loads and loads an nonexistent image). Again, the PDF is much better. |
