Kindle 3 freezes/reboots infinitely

I moved this to this forum so perhaps some braniacs out there might have some thoughts.

Out of warranty, was using unlighted Kindle 3 cover. I've tried it all--Hard reboots, Factory reset, even a successful Kubrick re-flash. No luck. The unit continuously freezes, then after some time reboots itself, works properly for about a minute, and then starts the process over and over until the battery is dead.

The only thing I haven't tried is replacing the battery. Its it worth it at $20-$30?

Amazon will only offer me refurb replacements which don't seem to be a great deal.

Thoughts?

It's like $41 for a refurb Kindle E-ink, $71 for a Touch (not Paperwhite). Not sure about the shipping, though others have said in these forums that it was NOT included.

If you were willing to spend $20-$30, then $41 with a warranty is not too bad. I'd go for it given that if it's not right, you can exchange/return it.

The strangest thing is that when it reboots, it functions normally. I can even access the unit's storage during that time from my PC. I'm just wondering if this is known behavior for a failing battery, since I have the unit in a pristine OS condition.

... and this is what you get when you cross-post - duplication

(No, there is no need to cross-post general troubleshooting questions to the main and dev forum - most people here do read the main forum too).
