Another Oberon small journal conversion
Inspired by the many beautiful Oberon journal covers used on Sony e-readers I decided to try it myself. I chose the small journal instead of the PRS-600 cover since I didn't really like the straps used by the Oberon cover for the PRS-600. Furthermore, I didn't go for the Velcro solution that some others have used since I like the option of removing my reader from the cover.
In this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=105386&page=2 I got the idea of using the same system as the standard Sony cover used: Magnets to keep the cover shut and a spine to attach the reader to the cover. The spine build in that thread seemed solid enough, but looked a bit "industrial" for the Oberon cover. That's why I came up with the following idea: Instead of screws I use rod magnets with a 3mm diameter to attach the cover to the reader. I have glued these magnets to a leather strap and a button that nicely matches the Oberon look. I attached these straps to the Oberon cover to secure the reader. This is the final result: It is not 100% finished yet. I'm planning to put a piece of sheet metal between two sheets of felt in front of the screen to give some additional protection, and I might put some more sheet metal in the extra felt to the right of the reader to keep it closed better. But still, so far I think I have a good looking cover that seems to hold the reader just fine. I have given it a shake test (above my bed) and the reader did not move, also in opened position the reader stays securely in its place. |

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing your innovative solution. I like how you matched the buttons. I still love my Oberon cover. I am using the Kindle 2 version with my 950.

Classy cover, Ardjan!
Just curios -- can the Oberon cover fold back on itself? |

That is an awesome job! I've been trying to figure out how to get an old 600 bracket to hold a 650. can you elaborate on getting that to work?

Ardjan, that is awesome! What kind of glue did you use to attach the magnets and buttons to the leather? Do you feel they are secure?
Where did you source the rod magnets? Considering taking out the velcro and modifying my Oberon cover to be like yours! |

Oberon would be drowning in more money if they just made cases for the new PRS series. Why they're not doing it is just beyond the scope of logic and ambition in any business.

I am afraid I have never seen a 600 bracket, so I am not sure how to do that. I have read that the 600 bracket is a bit longer and that it is possible to shorten it by cutting out a piece in the middle, but I hope that there are people with more experience on this forum. I would not start cutting away just based on my knowledge here.

I drilled a small hole through the leather strap before glueing it to the button. After glueing the button to the strap I cleaned the glue in this hole using a small knife, a drill and a screwdriver (Basically I just scratched the glue in the hole away). A small drop of super glue was enough to fix the magnet in the hole in the leather. Be sure to clean the surfaces you want to glue thoroughly with something like acetone before applying the glue. The bond between the magnets and the rest of the strap feels very secure, but only time can tell if it really is of course (I just finished it a couple of days ago). I bought them from a web shop in Holland (http://www.magnetenspecialist.nl/rods-03x6-p-172.html) so that is probably not a good option for you. But since I was able to find at least two shops that sell them here in Holland there is probably also a shop selling them closer to your region. Just make sure that you buy very strong magnets (they are usually called rare-earth magnets or neodymium magnets). The diameter of 3mm is perfect for the PRS-650. Mine are 6mm long, but I think a bit shorter would be better (depending on the thickness of the straps you want to use). I think 4mm would be the perfect length. Quote:
- First I put a piece of insulation tape (the kind that can be removed without leaving stains) on both the top of the leather straps and the bottom of the reader. - Next I put a piece of two sided tape (the kind that does leave stains, hence the first step ) on the tape on the straps. - After that I put the magnets in the holes on the reader, pulled the straps tight and attached them to the reader so that the two sided tape was between the pieces of insulation tape. This put the straps in the right position relative to the reader. - Finally I put the reader in the cover, marked where the straps were and applied contact adhesive to both the cover and the straps. After letting them dry for 15 minutes (read the contact glue manual) I put the reader back in the cover (with the straps still attached with the tape), by first attaching the magnets at the side of the reader and making sure the edge of the reader was in the right position and then pressing the 2 areas with glue firmly together. Since the contact adhesive fixes almost instantaneously it is very important to position the reader perfectly. I waited for 10 minutes before removing the tape (even though this should not be necessary since contact adhesive dries quickly after attaching the two parts). Good luck with your cover! |

The plastic used in the spines is resistant to most adhesives. This means you'll have a hard time attaching it to the cover. You've also just broken the structural integrity of the spine (won't glue well to itself). Not saying it can't be done, just be prepared. On top of this, the plastic spines tend to break at the bend -- shame to loose all that work from a broken piece of flimsy plastic. Solutions like Ardjan's, wayIman's and mine involve fabricating your own bracket, and the refined ideas don't require high material costs or a lot of equipment to implement. In the end, you'll have a better quality spine and a nice project you can be proud of! |

I just ordered the Kindle 2 Oberon cover for my 950 as well, mainly due to your good experience. I got the Dragonfly Pond one in Fern. I can't wait to get it!!
