Endless Fear - Adrianne Lee [Suspense/Thriller]

Amazon US---Amazon UK

-This book was originally published by Zebra in 1992.

Quote:
For twelve long years, April Farraday has struggled to recall what happened the night of her mother's fatal fall down a flight of stairs. Did she push her mother to her death? If she is ever to be free to spend her life with the man she loves, April must return to scene of the crime and confront her forgotten past.

But there are those at Calendar House who also fear the return of April's memory, including the man she loves, and they will do anything to keep the truth from coming out. Including committing another murder.

Free from Oceanview - Identity: Lost by Pascal Marco.

Quote:
It's July, 1975 and an overworked Chicago police force receives a call that an 85-year-old white man has been attacked by a gang of black youths on the lakefront in Burnham Park. Amid public outrage, contentious Mayor Richard J. Daley commands his police to find the killers fast and make the bucolic park safe again.Uncommonly but fortunately for the police, twelve-year-old James Overstreet steps forward and identifies five of the six assailants and arrests are made. But detectives and county attorneys bungle the case, leaving the judge no choice but to release the accused. This startling turn of events jeopardizes James's life, forcing the entire Overstreet family into witness protection in Arizona, and creates a nightmare that will haunt the brave witness forever.Fast-forward thirty years. The stoic young man has grown to become Maricopa County's most feared prosecutor. But his life is about to be turned upside down when paths from the past cross into the present, veering toward a shocking climax.

G.M. Ford's backlist, originally published by Walker & Company, a division of Bloomsbury, in the 1990s, is being republished by Amazon's Thomas & Mercer imprint. Five of the seven Leo Waterman detective series set in Washington are reduced from $4.99. All are $2.99 except Thicker Than Water, the latest and apparently last one, which is $1.99.

Quote:
Hapless, rumpled, heart-on-his-sleeve, middle-aged, intelligent, grumpy, funny, smart-ass, and true blue, Seattle private eye LEO WATERMAN stumbles from one bizarre case to another, in this highly-entertaining, sometimes laugh-out loud funny, critically-acclaimed series, by G.M. Ford. Aiding him in his escapades are "the boys," a gang of "residentially-challenged devotees of cheap alcohol." Yep, not to put too fine a point on it, Leo's sidekicks are a bunch of winos and bums .
Thrilling Detective

1. Who in Hell is Wanda Fuca?

Quote:
When an old gangster friend of Leo's father makes a request he "can't refuse," Leo and his band of drunks, delve into the world of environmental politics in search of Caroline Nobel, a spoiled brat, without the sense God gave a gopher. With the help of "the Boys" -- a group of aging winos who are his modern day "Baker Street Irregulars" -- Leo fights Native American tribal politics, industrial pollution, and psychotic grannies to fulfill his obligation to a friend.
2. Cast in Stone

Quote:
Leo's boyhood hero, Henry "Heck" Sundstrom was larger than life. Lately, however Heck's life has been spiraling out of control. First the honeymoon boating accident that killed Heck's son and new daughter-in-law, Allison. And now the big man himself was dying--struck down by delivery truck in a seedy section of Seattle. As he starts to investigate, Leo begins to wonder if Allison went down with the ship. And whether, with the aid of his, aging legmen, "the Boys," he can prove they're on the trail of a "black widow" who may be less "late" and more lethal than anyone ever suspected.
3. The Bum's Rush

Quote:
When a homeless woman says she's the mother of a deceased rock idol, sometimes private eye Leo Waterman takes it upon himself to investigate the lady's claim. With the help of "the boys", a band of dissolute deputies, Leo begins a life-threatening pursuit of the truth nobody wants to hear.
4. Slow Burn

Quote:
Anticipating problems, a prestigious global restaurant convention hires Leo as Special Security Officer. His assignment: monitor the movements of two adversarial steakhouse competitors whose "beef" has previously made for some nasty confrontations and a food critic who's caught in between the warring factions. Leo sends the Boys off to shadow all three parties and report back to him. But even the simplest of plans can cascade into catastrophe. And Leo soon finds himself served up as the prime suspect in a murder...realizing that both his life and career are at stake.
7. Thicker Than Water

Quote:
Hard living collects its fair share of casualties, but somehow Leo Waterman avoided becoming one of them. Destined for a trust fund that was taking too damn long to kick in, he spent years eking out a living in Seattle as a private investigator. Along the way he managed to survive countless run-ins with murderers, drug dealers, and jealous wives. But when Rebecca, the love of his life, dumped him to marry someone else…that was a different story. Still, he took it like a man, eventually collecting his family money and slipping into semi-retirement—until the day an unwelcome visitor brings him the worst possible news. Rebecca has vanished and no one, not even her manipulative, overprotective mother, can find a trace of her. Together with his band of informers and sidekicks (in truth a rather motley crew of homeless drunks and reprobates), Leo wades back into the game, determined to save Rebecca once and for all. But her trail is a twisted one, thick with deception and depravity that winds from the rain-swept streets of Seattle to the murky depths of the great North Woods. The stink of it all seems to emanate from none other than Rebecca’s new husband, Brett Ward, whose tangle of lies will cast Leo into the path of a ruthless gang that will stop at nothing—not even murder—to protect what’s theirs.

Mitford:

New America by Michael A. Smith is free now, for those of you who missed his other ones.

Quote:
Jeremiah, a self-styled, modern-day prophet, inspires millions of his followers to move to New America, a utopian colony centered in South Dakota and surrounding states. They buy land, establish businesses, create new cities and take over the machinery of government--including the National Guard and State Police. With financing from abroad, Jeremiah's mercenary army seizes a fleet of stealth bombers and occupies a nuclear power plant near Washington, D.C. Jeremiah's demand that the federal government recognize New American as an independent state creates a military and constitutional crisis. The forces that oppose Jeremiah include his old nemesis, former FBI agent Steve Wallace, and his wife, Laura Delaney, an ex-television journalist who is the object of Jeremiah's obsession.

I just stumbled across a free cozy mystery: Progressive Dinner Deadly by Elizabeth Spann Craig.

Quote:
Retired octogenarian schoolteacher Myrtle Clover is fit to be tied when her book club votes to change to a supper club. Who wants chips and dip when they can have Dickens and Twain?

The first supper club is a progressive dinner...where Myrtle loses interest during the hors d'oeuvres. But when a body is discovered during the main course, the evening quickly gets interesting. Myrtle pits her sleuthing skills against her police chief son's to find the killer....if the killer doesn't find her first.

Fire and Ice, the first book in Dana Stabenow's mystery series starring Liam Campbell is free at Amazon.com.

Quote:
Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell, demoted and reassigned to the remote bush town of Newenham, literally steps off the plane into a murder scene. Dealing with death is never simple, but when the woman leaning over the body proves to be Liam's old flame, it’s evident that his new job is about to become much more complicated. Of course, small town tensions tend to simmer just beneath the surface, and murder, once done, has a tendency to happen again.

“What were you intending to do with Mr. Engebretsen, Bill?”

They both regarded the bound man for a moment. The bar watched and waited in silence. “Well,” Bill said finally, “I was thinking about supergluing his shooting hand to one cheek of his ass and his other hand around a beer bottle.”

Liam stared. She appeared to be absolutely serious. He opened his mouth, and she said, “He drinks too much, does Teddy. I’m not totally unfeeling—the bottle of beer will be a full one, but after it’s gone, that’s it.”

“I like it,” the Old Fart said, and grinned evilly when Teddy’s eyes bulged over the edge of the gag.

“Or we could just shoot him,” she said, and raised the .30-06 to work the action. She gave a satisfied nod. “Plenty of ammunition. Course at this distance I really only need one.”
