Other than the Kindle and Nook, what devices can you sideload on?

Tablets as well as e-readers, and how (via USB cable)? Thanks in advance for your replies!

Certainly anything with a USB slot. Or that ends in a USB plug (Samsung Galaxy Tab).

You can side load on all readers I believe. Kindle, Nook, Sony and Kobo as well as iPhone/iPad comes with their own eco system, all other readers are dependent on side loading for their existence. I believe the norm is that you connect through USB and then the device is treated as an external drive. The only device, and I'm not entirely sure here because I have never used it, that might not have side loading is the iPhone/iPad, but that can probably be solved by uploading books to an iTunes account and then receiving it from there. Someone using those devices should be able to clarify.

For the iphone/itouch, you can always navigate to a file in the browser, and download it and open it in whatever app you want.

Just be advised if you have an older OS on you PC (like XP): Not all OS support MPT type (USB) devices well.
If the device has a removable SD type card, you can usually load the card directly using a cheap 'card reader' with your PC

I did not say USB (general)
I said Media Player (Mode) type USB devices.
Calibre had enough issues with these that the support for them is disabled on XP

As far as I am aware, Kobo sideloads (the Kobo Mini definitely does), but if I'm not mistaken, I think most e-readers do this.

Sideloading is the only way to do it with a JetBook Lite.

I have side loaded on my Kindle Keyboard, Kobo Touch, and iPad - and when I used it on my Bookeen Gen 3. I'm sure I could side load on my Sonys if I had to, but use calibre so I haven't tried.

Perhaps the question might be 'What ereaders can't you side load on?'

Perhaps you'd do better just saying what your budget is and what you want your ereader for - is it just for reading, do you read at night in the dark, does it have to fit in your pocket etc etc. We could point you at a suitable device.

That's exactly what Calibre is doing - transferring files via USB.

I don't know of ANY reading device which doesn't allow you to transfer your own content via a USB connection.

Yes, you have to use iTunes, but it still transfers via USB. I believe that with the Kobo you have to use a desktop app, too.

Nope... The Kobo Desktop app is ONLY used for direct downloads of books in Kobo eBook format (commonly called kEpub) to the device.

For regular ePubs you can either copy them directly via either the command line, or a file-system browser (ie Windows Explorer), or use a tool like Adobe Digital Edition or calibre.
