BeBook To Support PDB?

The BeBook support staff have announced on their forum that they will be supporting PDB format in their next firmware release. Won't this be the first e-ink device with PDB support?

What is .PDB? Aren't there several formats that use that extension?

I believe they are referring to the .pdb extension used by eReader.

I don't know if they will support encrypted .pdb files. There's not much info on the BeBook site. Basically, it's just a statement of their intention to support .pdb in some way, shape or form in their next firmware release.

So, what's all that fuss about ? As you said on BeBook's forum you've been using the modified Lunohod's firmware and the support for PDB files in that firmware exists there for ages, the same as for some other formats, which work there much better than in the original firmware:
* fb2 e-book format (style attributes are not supported yet).
* HTML format (tables are not supported).
* CHM format (tables are not supported).
* plucker format (tables are not supported).
* Palmdoc (aportis doc).
* zTxt (Weasel format).
* TCR (psion text) format.
* RTF format (stylesheets and tables are not supported).
* OEB format (css and tables are not supported).
* OpenReader format (css and tables are not supported).
* Non-DRM'ed mobipocket format (tables are not supported).
* Plain text format.
* EPUB

Some people might like .pdb support without using a modified firmware, especially if that turns out to include support for encrypted .pdb files.

"Support for pdb files" is a totally meaningless statement, given that a PDB file is simply a "container" format which can contain any type of data whatsoever. Please be more specific - precisely what data formats in PDB files will be supported?

BeBook has stated on their supportforums that they will support pdb "in future releases". they have however as far as I can tell said anything about what doc format they will support inside the pdb.

But I assume it will be PalmDoc?

PalmDoc or eReader would be the logical choices, certainly. Both those use PDB extensions. PalmDoc would be trivial to support, given that it's just plain text, compressed with a very straightforward compression method. I question its value, though - PalmDoc really has no advantages over text files at all, except for the questionable benefit that the files are a bit smaller.

Actually if you support eReader, PalmDOC is basically a freebie. Similar with MobiPocket you get PalmDOC. PalmDOC uses the same compression method as these two products. There are advantages to PalmDOC over text in that most Text implementations are line based and have hard returns at the end of every line. This is a pain to read on a Reader. PalmDOC is very scalable in that it is paragraph oriented rather than line oriented. It permits you to choose the font size and font type and displays just fine. The reason to support it is that there is a huge database of eBooks present in this format. For fiction reading it is adequate so long as you don't need italics or bold text.

But doesn't a mobi format reader already read PalmDoc? Why would they need to add support for it?

Yea, I said that in my post. Amazon seems to have blocked it intentionally but generally Mobi will read PalmDOC formats. They just need to recognize it and allow it to be read. I think the rumor is more about eReader than PalmDOC. Other interesting pdb formats are iSilo, plucker, and tomeraider.
