I do love his books, but no way am I buying a trade paperback. I can't stand those things, not to mention they're too expensive. So I guess I'll just be reading something else! Sorry, Mr. King.

I can wait till it comes out as an ebook. It's only a book, and it's only Stephen King.
And I'm a big fan of Mr King. |

Big deal. His last couple of books didn't come out as ebooks right away, either. That's how I ended up listening to Under the Dome as an audiobook.

The paperback will be priced at less than $8 which is less expensive than his other ebooks.

I don't like Stephen King, so this doesn't affect my reading, but what strikes me is the arbitrariness of this decision. For one book he proclaims digital-only is fine, for another book it's paper all the way. He's the all-powerful author, so he gets to dictate to the benighted masses.
I can respect a principled stand against digital books, even if I don't agree, but I can't respect this kind of flip-flop. Is it an experiment? Does it amuse him to do this simply because he can? Or does he crave the publicity to feed his ego? |

Is there any hint at why he wants to do this? Not putting out an ebook is just cutting out those customers who only buy ebooks (of which I'm one) which seems odd considering putting out an ebook is easier than paper.
Sure he can cut out any market he wants and will make plenty from paper books. Just seems odd for any author to limit their potential market. Unless he's just playing a sneaky PR game. A no ebook announcement was bound to spread across various forums and perhaps some news sites which in turn gets the book mentioned all over the place without the advertising costs I won't buy it as I'm ebook only. Whether I'll get it when the ebook finally arrives (if ever) depends on how many other books I've snapped up in the meantime. |

And here I was thinking his next book was "Doctor Sleep" aka the shining 2 ...
Anyway no worries about this, I'm sure the book will be available electronically, one way or the other |

This would be more believable if he only made the book available in bookstores, but we will be seeing it at WalMart, grocery stores, drug stores, Costco, on-line retailers etc.

His comments are certainly 'stirring the sticks' on this thread, his intention all along, I like to think!

While I agree he isn't obligated to make an ebook version of any of his works available I do also agree that he's being a bit flippant in his attitude towards potential readers. There is a difference between stating a preference of format that you want to use for a book you write and being rude about things. While he may not have intended it to sound rude I can certainly see how some (myself included) may see it as such, and I do like to read his work.

How different is this from JK Rowling's and the Harry Potter books? Yes she now has them available in eBook format, but only many years after they were first released (and one could say, only after milking society for all she could on the hard-copy versions).
