WebOS itself is a fantastic little operating system. It deserves more than to be hacked up for the sake of Android. Besides, Android is fragmented enough as is. |

It would be a shame to see it disappear altogether. Maybe it just reflects that they're changing tack with some of the features and that something similar is still being considered for 'later'?

Yeah, as discussed the general feeling is that they're just going to redo it with WebOS instead of Windows 7 since they acquired Palm.

One can hope!
But I think we'll see mostly 16x9ish screens in most early tablets as they're probably opting to use cheaply available netbooks screens etc. |

Unfortunately, I have to agree. I think we'll be stuck with 16:9 for a while, for the reasons you've outlined.

Palm's failure had a lot to do with the poor marketing and the choice to go exclusively with a smaller carrier when they launched the Pre. WebOS is a very intuitive mobile OS, in my view more elegant than the iPhone OS and Android, and with HP's deep pockets this could be a wise move.

Right.
WebOS is the bomb. The Pre is the bomb. The homebrew community behind webOS is the bomb. HP buying Palm is possibly even more bomb. As Phil from AndroidCentral.com stated... putting more money into Palm is just like putting more memory into the Pre, yielding the Pre Plus. It's just a beautiful thing. I can't wait to see what HP brings to the table. But they will bring many things, and webOS isn't going anywhere. Unfortunately, I'm not interested in a tablet ATM. I'm looking for an eReader. I'll keep webOS on my smartphone... tho I would like webOS as my desktopOS as well, in all honesty. Just no room for a tablet in *my* life. E-Ink is precisely what I need. |

And here we go. The trusty rumour mill is working overtime.
