I'm just thinking this may be a gift for my 8 year old nephew . Call me curmugeonly, though but giving an 8 year old a delicate $200 device does seem crazy.

Lol, first dissenting opinion on this thread so far. I was originally thinking the same thing but on introspection, she's a lot more careful with her things than I am so the "delicate" argument didn't really have much merit.

As for being expensive, it only costs $20 more than the Nintendo DS Lite I gave her 3 years ago. That's the last nice gift I gave her so she was due for another spoiling. I was thinking of getting her the new DS but then, I was browsing the app store and saw all these educational kids apps so I got to thinking an iPod Touch might make a better gift. It would certainly be more versatile.

My 7-year old daughter has an iPod touch for over a year now. My other daughter who will be 4 at Christmas is getting one for her birthday. She uses her older sister's touch now, and uses it well for games. My 7-year old is a whiz on it and takes very good care of it! We only enable wi-fi when we are with her, and she facetimes her friends and grandmother. She loves it and I find it to be educational for her as well.

Public admission of guilt here. After seeing how well our two year old daughter was doing with educational games on my wife's iPhone, we (I) decided to get her an iPod touch. It's pretty crazy how she took off, almost intuitively, knowing how to swipe across the screens, switch between games, etc... She's three now and still has a working 4th gen iPod touch, albeit wrapped in an Otterbox knockoff acquired from Amazon.
